The Pittsburgh Harlequins have started the Mid-Atlantic DI club season 2-0, winning on the road against Washington, and then beating a solid NOVA team at home.
Now comes to time when the ‘Quins show they are for real. Winning on the road is a crucial piece of the puzzle for teams in any league, but it seems especially important in MARFU, which covers five states and the District of Columbia and where away games can really trips teams up. To be considered serious contenders for the Mid-Atlantic title, the Harlequins have to win away at Media.
Still, their home victory against NOVA, which had beaten Norfolk the week before, was an impressive step. “I thought the team played well together,” said captain Nick Koon. “Between the veteran leadership and hard work of the rookies the cohesion was obvious. The guys worked well together both in the forwards and backs and achieved the goals we had set for ourselves.”
With Kaili “Coach Tonga” Finau running the team now, Pittsburgh has had to undergo some adjustments. But it all seems to be working.
“We have proven that even with all the talk, rumors and head coach change, if we stay focused on what we have to do as a team and players then we can make a good run at making the playoffs,” said Koon. “We just have to continue working hard in practice and get it done in the games.” Meanwhile PAC visits longtime rivals Washington. Washington is looking for better things after years of difficulty, but won’t find any favors with PAC. In a battle of winless teams, 0-1 Schuylkill River visits 0-2 Raleigh. The only other game of note is NOVA hosting Baltimore-Chesapeake. If either team wants to be thinking about playoffs, they need to win this. B-C is 0-1, NOVA, which surprised Norfolk 34-28 at home in the opening weekend, is 1-1.
