Glendale Takes Down Santa Monica
Clubs - Men's DI Clubs

Chula Vista, California – Glendale RFC won their first match of the Round of  16 tournament at the Olympic Training Center in Chula Visat, California, in fine style by downing Santa Monica Rugby Club by 50-19.

Phillipa Snyman photoCenter Tyler Siegel set the wheels in motion when he touched down for a try in the first 2 minutes of the game and 10 minutes later, Center Justin Pauga went over the try line to bring the score to 10-0.  Full back, James Paterson was next to score and fly half Nese Malifa slotted the ball between the posts to make the score 17-0.  Flanker Michael Kenyon slammed over the try line in the 28th minute and Malifa’s kick was true which further gave Glendale RFC the dominance they were enjoying in the first half with a solid score on the board of 24-0.  Siegel dotted down again for his second try of the match as the half time whistle blew and Glendale RFC had the lead at 31 to Santa Monica Rugby Club’s 0.

Santa Monica came out in the second half like a new team with much more focus and commitment.  Shortly after Glendale RFC’s scrum half, Daryl Furlong, scored a try off of a well executed grubber in the 42nd minute, Santa Monica embarked on ten minutes of intense play which saw Captain and No. 8, Ken Aseme, charge over the line for SMRC’s first points on the board.  Fly half Brian O’Shea was able to convert the try.  SMRC’s full back Ali Ross was next to put points on the board for his team however O’Shea’s kick was no good and the scoreboard read GRFC 36 – SMRC 12.

Glendale RFC answered Santa Monica’s onslaught with a powerful try by No 8 and captain, Nic Johnson who crashed over the line after a good series of recycling by the GRFC forwards.  Substitute wing, Sam Botkins, sprinted over the line in the 50th minute to reach the half century mark for Glendale RFC and even though SMRC came back again with a late try by Cam Maloni which, O’Shea was successful in converting, time had run out and the scoreboard told the story of Glendale’s dominance of the game at 50-19.
