Santa Monica Beats Utah
Clubs - Men's DI Clubs

Santa Monica went in to Park City, Utah and downed the Utah Brothers to make the Men’s DI Round of 16 Saturday.

Utah coach Tim Lewis, who has coached with Santa Monica, said the Californians were favored in the match, and they Dolphins did indeed to enough to win.

Sean Pypers opened to scoring for Santa Monica 13 minutes in, and Brian O’Shea converted. Six minutes later O’Shea hit a penalty to make it 10-0 Santa Monica.

But Utah battled back. They scored after a long period of pressuring the Santa Monica line, and then, with the Dolphins threatening on an odd-man rush, scored on an interception to lead 10-14.

Chastened by Head Coach Doug Bratcher for giving up two relatively soft tries, Santa Monica took control of most of the second half. O’Shea hit a penalty and then ten minutes into the second half, with a Utah player in the sin bin, Kelly Serfoss scored to put the Dolphins up 20-14.O’Shea kept the scoreboard ticking over with another penalty. Then a try from AJ Wooley made it 30-14 and O’Shea, solid with the boot all day, claimed another three points to make it 33-14.

Utah scored with a minute to go but O’Shea was again true with a kick to ensure the cushion.

36-24 Santa Monica wins. O’Shea scores at the final whistle to end a 21-point day.
