It’s slow going starting the South DI league season, but no one is complaining – at least there is a season. Coming off an opening 31-29 loss to New Orleans, the Atlanta Renegades hosted Charlotte in their second league game of the season. Charlotte had the better of the game early as Atlanta, which hasn’t been able to practice much together, fell off tackles and in general looked sloppy. But as the game wore on the Renegades started playing more as a unit. They tied the game near halftime and then shut out Charlotte in the second half to win 37-15. For Head Coach Garry Sullivan it was good to get the bonus point victory, “but our performance was not up to the level we expect it to be.” The earlier loss to the New Orleans just had to be swallowed, said Sullivan, but seeing as the season is an eight-game, home-and-away series, they have plenty of time to make it up. “It was tough to lose at home, so we’re going to have to do well on the road now,” Sullivan said. Leading the way for the Renegades were experience backs Nathan Rogers and Luke Waikamakama. The latter made several impressive breaks, and helped set up Roderigus Caesar for three tries. Next up for Atlanta is a friendly with Life University, which pummeled Tampa Krewe this weekend. "We're very happy to have a real league schedule this year," said Sullivan. "There's lots of travel but the guys are up for it." Next up for the USA Rugby South league, Boca Raton travels to New Orleans. |
