Old Blue New York won New Haven 7s Saturday, defeating both of Boston's sides en route to their first qualifier title of the summer. Old Blue, undefeated throughout the first two games in pool play, started reserves in a loss to Boston II in their pool finale, pitting themselves against Boston I in one semifinal, and Boston II against Long Island in the other. Boston II advanced to the championship match with a 24-7 defeat of Long Island, but they wouldn't meet their clubmates in the final, because in the other semifinal, Boston's first side dropped its first loss of the summer, 33-21, to Old Blue. The New Yorkers then avenged their pool loss to Boston II in the final, 21-7. No third place game was played, but Boston I was deemed the consolation champ. The Northeast Championships are July 23 in New York, hosted by the Village Lions. Below are the eight teams who will compete for the Northeast's two bids to Nationals, preceded by seed and succeeded by point total. 1. Boston 64 2. Old Blue 58 3. Boston II 36 4. Long Island 28 5. Middlesex 26 6. Morris 18 7. Old Blue II 18 8. NYRC 16

Belmont Shore dominated Santa Monica 7s Saturday, Southern California's first qualifier. Belmont outscored opponents 149-19 on the day, and pounded Old Mission Beach Athletic Club 49-7 in the tournament final.
Only six teams competed, with Belmont, OMBAC and Santa Monica all entering their second side to fill out the field. Each team played four pool play games, facing everyone but their own club. At the end of pool play, Belmont's second team and OMBAC both boasted a 3-1 record, but OMBAC advanced having beaten Belmont II 24-17. With the win, Belmont has claimed a bid to Nationals for the fifth consecutive year. SoCal's second seed is up for grabs at Belmont's tournament Saturday in Long Beach, Calif. USA Rugby's new eligibility regulations prohibit a club from qualifying two teams to Nationals, but Belmont intends to enter a side in their own tournament and challenge that regulation. Several former and current 7s Eagles are expected to play for Belmont Saturday, including Shalom Suniula, Justin Boyd, Alex Ross, Matt Hawkins, Tai Enosa and Dallen Stanford.

The provincial side defeated a number of opposing teams with more rugby sevens experience including the U19 All-Americans.
"Most of these guys have little or no experience playing sevens," Ontario head coach Darrell Devine told BCRugbyNews.com. "We had a system and our players really bought into it during the tournament. We really improved with each game."
The All Americans struggled to a 2-3 finish, defeating only a Utah select side and Canadian Prairies. With the HSAA 15s team on tour in South Africa, the 7s squad experienced a lot of turnover from their last gathering -- the Las Vegas Invitational, which they won. Only Patrick Barrientes returned from the Vegas squad. Barrientes was the sole All American to be named to the all tournament team in Victoria. Utah's Tino Lapale was also selected to the team.

Santa Barbara, CA - The USA Women's U20s lost to England 37-0 today during the second round of the Nations Cup. England scrumhalf Fiona Davidson scored four tries on the junior Eagles and helped secure the Roses' berth to the championship game. England's opponent won't be named until Wednesday's games, when the USA and Canada face off.
The Eagles were able to keep England off the board in the first quarter, but a series of penalties started to stress the USA's defense. About 15 minutes in, England stole a USA scrum, then quick-tapped through a subsequent penalty to send Davidson down the weak side for the try.
Five minutes later, the USA found itself defending its five meter, repelling a hefty forward attack. Davidson swung the ball out to the backs and saw its wing get around the corner for the 10-0 lead. Ten minutes later, the USA stole one of several scrums, but the ball popped out the side. England recovered and fell over the try line, 15-0. The Americans returned the favor just before half, scooping up another ball that skirted out of the scrum, but England turned it over in the ruck. The ball worked out to the backs, where captain Harriet Mills inserted from NO. 8 and scored, 22-0.
It was much of the same story in the second half, and England was able to run in another three tries for the 37-0 victory.
Canada beat South Africa 27-7 in other match today, thereby tying the USA with a 1-1 record and two points apiece. The North Americans will decide who moves onto the final against England on Wednesday. England is expected to beat South Africa in the third round, and with the win will have beaten every U20 team in the world (there are six) in 2011.
Stay tuned for a detailed match report and feedback.
