7s Nationals Brackets Set
Sevens - Club Sevens

Dobson ImagesThe brackets at the USA Rugby men's Club 7s Championships are set after this weekend's action.

Boston won the Northeast, beating Middlesex in the final. Both teams qualify. Chicago Lions defeated YoungBloodz in the Midwest final. Both teams qualify.

Schuylkill River beat a surprising Pittsburgh in the Mid-Atlantic final. Both teams qualify.

OMBAC won the Belmont Shore 7s over Belmont Shore II to take the #2 seed form SoCal. Belmont Shore I had already qualified.

And at the Denver 7s, four teams entered tied with six points in the standings, and those four made the semifinals. In the end, Woodlands Exiles came back to beat Denver in the final to secure the #1 seed. Denver takes #2, and Glendale, by virtue of beating the Dallas Harlequins in the 3rd/4th game.

Lions Do Enough to Win MW
Sevens - Club Sevens

Chicago Lions MW 7s Championship team. The Chicago Lions are Midwest 7s club champions after defeating YoungBloodz 26-14 in the final of the Midwest Championships.

The Lions won all their pool games but faced a stern challenge in the semis, beating a physical (and sometimes perhaps too physical) 1823 squad 14-5 to advance to the final.

YoungBloodz, meanwhile, won their pool and advanced to the final after defeating the Chicago Griffins.

In the final, Brad Harrington, Peter Tiberio, Eddie Bluemel and Rocco Mauer all scored tries to seal the victory for the Lions.

“I have to give a shout-out to Scott Peterson, who really put his body on the line today,” said Lions Head Coach Aaron Manheimer. “He made some huge tackles for us and handled himself when he was targeted by what I felt were some illegal tackles, as well.”

It was a ferociously hot day in Michiana, Ind., and humid as well, and that taxed all the players involved.

But the Lions handled it better than most, led by captain Bluemel, the hard running of Matt Degutes, and the finishing ability of Tiberio and Mauer. They had to battle in the semifinal, their closest match in the Midwest championships in several years. Tries from Degutes and JP Eloff saw them through.

YoungBloodz, for their part, did just enough to qualify for nationals, and might be forgiven for being relieved that they didn’t win the final. The Midwest winners go into the Pool of Death at nationals, along with Utah Warriors, SFGG, and Glendale Raptors.

The #2 team enters Pool D with Schuylkill River, SoCal #2, and West #2.

Schuylkill, Pittsburgh 'Quins Earn Top Spots at MARFU
Sevens - Club Sevens

The Schuylkill River Exiles beat Pittsburgh Harlequins, 21-14, in the men's premier division final at the Mid-Atlantic Rugby Football Union Championship tournament in Norfolk, Va. yesterday. Schuylkill River takes the MARFU's first seed going into Nationals and Pittsburgh earned the second seed.

The 100-degree heat could not stop the Exiles and over the course of pool play, Schuylkill River beat Wilmington, Norfolk and their eventual final opponent Pittsburgh, racking up 92 points and only giving up 24.

In the semifinals, the Exiles faced their Maryland Exile counterparts in a rematch of last weekend’s Richmond 7s final. Schuylkill River edged ahead and won, 14-7, to earn their spot in the final.

Pittsburgh actually had a disappointing pool record and were hit by a few injuries early on, losing the opener to Kutztown and ending with the loss to Schuylkill River. Their one bright spot was the match against Wilmington, which Pittsburgh won 31-14. This win was enough to get them into the semifinals over Wilmington and tournament hosts Norfolk, who each lost or tied in all three of their pool matches.

Pittsburgh ended Kutztown’s hopes of qualifying for Nationals when they upset them in the semifinals, 19-14.

At this point, both Schuylkill River and Pittsburgh Harlequins had qualified for Nationals, it was just a matter of who would get the first and second seeds.

Schuylkill repeated their earlier win by coming out on top in the championship match, 21-14. The two teams will compete at the Club 7s National Championship on August 6-7 in San Francisco, Calif.

In the women’s premier division, NOVA beat the Washington Furies in the decider. NOVA, therefore, earned the first seed and the Furies will represent the MARFU as the second seed at Nationals.

NOVA beat out Philly, 24-0, and Severn Exiles, 19-5, before facing their second side in the semifinals. After a brief delay due to thunderstorms, NOVA beat NOVA 2 17-0.

The Furies made their way to the final by beating NOVA 2, 19-5, and shutting out Norfolk, 17-0. The D.C. team then recorded another shutout, 31-0 over Philly in the semifinals.

The championship final was the closest match of the day for either team. NOVA just edged out the Furies, 19-17, to decide the seeding for Nationals.

The men’s open division does not send anyone to Nationals, but Rocky Gorge saw off Richmond in the final, 19-0.
