The USA is coming off a great opening performance against England, in which the Eagles lost 15-11 on the last play of the game. If the USA can repeat their excellent performance from Tuesday, then they'll nearly lock up the opportunity to replay the Roses in the championship match on August 13.

Jamie Burke takes over the field captain duties from Kim Magrini and hopes to replicate the win that occured during the North Americans' last faceoff at the Rugby World Cup in September.

The game kicks off at 7:30 EST. Stay tuned for game details and player and coach feedback.

1. Farrah Douglas, 2. Devin Keller, 3. Jamie Burke (c), 4. Stacey Bridges, 5. Stacy Baker, 6. Shaina Turley, 7. Lynelle Kugler, 8. Kate Daley, 9. Kim Magrini, 10. Sadie Anderson, 11. Vix Folayan, 12. Pam Kosanke, 13. Amy Daniels, 14. Vanesha McGee, 15. Samantha Pankey.

Canada Names Strong Squad to Face USA
Canada - Men

Canada's senior men's coach Kieran Crowley is expecting a very physical game up front and an expansive game out wide from the U.S.A. at Toronto's BMO Field this Saturday for the Can-Am Trophy.

“Initially I think the teams will be feeling each other out, but once it settles down we're expecting some very exciting rugby, it's great to have this performance at BMO Field,” Crowley said. "We always have very physical games against the U.S. It's always pretty abrasive and you've got to try to get that physical dominance up front.”

Crowley has named an unchanged forward pack from Canada's last game against the England Saxons in the Churchill Cup final, with some tweaking in the backline to mix youth with experience and attacking prowess out wide.

The forward pack and the side will be led by captain Pat Riordan, joined in the front row by Hubert Buydens at loosehead and Jason Marshall at tighthead.

The engine room will be powered by the physical presence of Jamie Cudmore and Brian Erichsen, while the familiar back-row combination of Jebb Sinclair, Chauncey O'Toole and Aaron Carpenter continue their hold at the loose.

The backline features four players returning from the Churchill Cup final and the return of Ed Fairhurst at scrum-half, who will celebrate his 51st cap for Canada. The moment will be a special one for Fairhurst, as he will be recognized on home soil for his 50th, which was earned in a test match against Russia during the Churchill Cup.

While the occasions of Fairhurst's achievement and Canada's first-ever game at BMO Field will be big ones, Crowley said the team was more focused on the challenge on the field.

"Personal goals and the fact we're at BMO are great but in the end it comes down to the performance you put on the paddock and that's how we'll judge the game,” he said. “We need to focus on the game and those other things like Ed's recognition just give us a sense of occasion, but if we start using those as the motivators, we're not going to achieve what we want to.”

Fairhurst will combine with the World Cup squad's vice captain Ander Monro, the rudder of the backline.

The squad's current high-scorer James Pritchard has returned to blind wing, with Crowley opting to get DTH van der Merwe back in the action in the role of inside centre, beside Mike Scholz who will celebrate just his third cap as a senior Canadian representative.

"Mike's pretty new to international rugby, but we've certainly been very impressed with his performances, it's an opportunity to give him a crack,” Crowley said.

With the centre spots filled, Esher man Phil Mackenzie has been moved to open wing, with Matt Evans at fullback.

"We looked at our last game,” Crowley said. “Mackenzie, Pritchard and Evans all started. Phil has trained really well this week and he had a pretty good performance against the Saxons and we wanted to get DTH involved as well.”

Crowley has opted for a four-three combination with his reserves, with Ryan Hamilton, Scott Franklin, Tyler Hotson and Adam Kleeberger the forward substitutes. If he takes the field, Kleeberger will have played his first game for Canada since the 2010 European tour.

The backline reserves see Sean White ready to run on for Fairhurst, Ryan Smith as a centers backup and Ciaran Hearn for the outside backs.

Both teams have had a significant time between games, so will be looking to the game as an indication of how Rugby World Cup preparation is going.

Crowley and his team are excited for the challenge of facing a strong USA side in front of a Toronto crowd.

Rugby Canada is urging anyone still waiting to purchase their tickets to buy them in advance, as demand is high for this historic event.

Exiles Will Compete at Nationals
Sevens - Club Sevens

The Woodlands Exiles qualified for the Nationals by winning the West. They achieved that feat by going undefeated in the last two tournaments, Kansas City and Denver, winning 10-straight contests.

However, because of the rule that requires players to play in two tournaments with the team for whom they're playing at Nationals, and the new eligibility regulation that requires a club to have 10 Eagle-qualifying players on their roster, the Exiles' team eligibility for the weekend has been in question much of the week. The Exiles, after subtracting players who played in just one tournament, had less than 10 Eagle-qualifying players.

The Exiles applied for eligibility waivers for multiple players, regarding the two-tournament rule, but they were denied. At one point, the Exiles thought they were on the outs and would not be able to compete whatsoever. Later in the week, USA Rugby asked the Exiles to compete in San Francisco with their ineligible players without having a shot at the title. In that scenario, they would have played pool play, and regardless of their finish, moved to the consolation bracket Sunday.

Dr. David Pope, founder and coach, refused the offer. USA Rugby is now letting them compete with an eight-man roster. One player, Phil Mack, is a not eligible for the Eagles. The Exiles will be eligible for the National Championship.

Team D Leads Middlesex
Sevens - Club Sevens

Middlesex captain Jared Collinson helps lead an underdog with nothing to lose. Ian Durrant photo All the talk in Northeast 7s club circles, at least on RUGBYMag.com, has been about how great the Boston club is.

That’s not inaccurate, Boston is very strong, but it’s easy to forget Middlesex. Under coach Josh Smith the club has been folding in local college players (often from schools you don’t associate with college championships) with experienced clubmembers to form a strong program.

“We’re pretty happy with the progression,” said Smith. “We’ve had a core of seven guys for three or four years now. This summer we started putting together a pretty good side, and after the first time we decided we’d go into the qualifiers, and if we get beat up we get beat up.”

They finished second to Boston in the South Shore tournament, and from then they split the social and qualifier groups and started to chase a place at the national champions.

“We have a lot of guys working hard and pushing for that last spot in the Qualifier team, so that’s been really good,” said Smith. “We had some guys taking the summer off because we finished our 15s season in late May. But several of those guys came back to play as it became clear we were building something. So the competition to get into that group of 12 for the Qualifier team or that 24th spot in the social team has really elevated our game.”

Fifteens flanker and 7s prop John Cocinda has been the leader of the forwards. His fitness is outstanding and tackling almost perfect.

“He’s the guy who gets our defense going,” said Smith.

Two local college products Vini Daley and Jared Collinson have been the go-to men in the backs. Both are in their third summer playing 7s for Middlesex.  Collinson is now the captain of the team.

“For a young group of guys they are very mature,” said Smith. “Nobody went into Hell’s Gate [the NRU championships] thinking this was the last tournament of the summer. We were thinking San Francisco.”

An unknown team that played smart team defense and makes their tackles. It’s not a flashy group, but it’s one that can sneak up on people.

“We’re going to see some great players, but we’ve already played against some great players,” said Smith, “and I think we’re going to turn some heads.”
