Fairfield, Conn. - Boston College won the inaugural Jesuit Collegiate Invitational, defeating fellow Jesuit institutions Fairfield (17-0) and Holy Cross (42-7) in the three team competition. Holy Cross overwhelmed Fairfield 43-5 in the battle for third place.

The one-day Jesuit Collegiate was played on Fairfield’s dedicated rugby field and featured 40-minute matches. The event hopes to attract additional Jesuit colleges in succeeding years.

BOSTON COLLEGE 17, FAIRFIELD 0

Boston College took the event’s opening match with a 17-0 win over host Fairfield.

A try by hooker Steve Ferriter gave BC a 5-0 lead at halftime.

Boston College added second half tries by number-eight Tim Broderick and fullback Eric Gordon. Flyhalf Sam Shriver converted Gordon’s try, 17-0.


BOSTON COLLEGE 42, HOLY CROSS 7

Boston College’s second win was a 42-7 rout of long-time rival Holy Cross.

BC opened the scoring in the sixth minute. Scrumhalf Terry O’Neil touched down following a penalty against Holy Cross 10 meters from its own line and flyhalf Sam Shriver converted, 7-0.

An injury stoppage delayed the game for some time but BC extended its lead in the 16^th minute when No. 8 Jim Broderick picked up from a scrum and went 15 meters for a try that Shriver converted, 14-0.

Boston College’s third try came less than a minute into the second half when Eric Gordon touched down at the end of a 60 meter movement and Shriver converted, 21-0.

Holy Cross finally got on the board in the second minute when prop Ryan O’Kane scored following a penalty 10 meters from BC’s line and Carl Loscito converted, 21-7.

Boston College responded in the fifth minute when prop Pat Rockwell scored from a set piece five meters from Holy Cross’s line and Shriver nailed the conversion, 28-7.

BC concluded its scoring with a brother act.

Wing Joe Bronzo went 40 meters for a try in the 12^th minute, while brother Alan Bronzo went 15 meters for his try in the 18^th. Flyhalf Sam Shriver converted both, making him 6 for 6 on the day, and bringing the final tally to 42-7.

3rd Place: HOLY CROSS 43, FAIRFIELD 5

Holy Cross regained some respect following its blowout loss to Boston College, by inflicting similar damage (43-5) on host Fairfield to secure second place in the inaugural Jesuit Collegiate Invitational.

After 10 minutes of fairly equal play, Holy Cross opened the scoring with a corner try by Chris Casaccio that Carl Losito converted, 7-0.

Fullback Art Norden crossed four minutes later extending HC’s lead to 12-0.

Fairfield scored its only points in the 18^th minute when junior Sean Sweeney crashed over for a try from the 10, following a penalty against Holy Cross, 12-5.

Holy Cross responded at the end of the 20-minute half with a try by Mike Kennedy that Losito improved, 19-5.

Holy Cross’s scoring parade resumed five minutes after the restart with a try by flanker Tom Keeley and Losito’s conversion, 26-5.

HC flyhalf Mike Maresca touched down in the corner in the 11^th minute, followed by fullback Art Norden’s second try near the corner in the 16^th. Neither was converted, 36-5.

Holy Cross’s final points came in the 19^th minute, when a clearing kick from Fairfield’s end zone was blocked. Holy Cross’s Mike Kennedy retrieved the blocked kick and ran in for Holy Cross’s final try. Carl Losito’s conversion brought the score to Holy Cross 43, Fairfield 5.
