Two of the most intriguing Friday pool matches in the CRC Qualifier bracket featured four undefeated teams, as Davenport faced Utah for the top
It can be hard to come out with full intensity in an 8am match, but the Golden Bears managed to.seed out of Pool B in Conference 2 and Kutztown played Mizzou for the top seed out of Conference 1’s Pool B.
“We were up at 5am this morning. It does take a toll on you. It was pretty quiet on the bus, but we had to focus in our warmups. Intensity was a bit low, but we picked it up and we brought it out on the field,” said Kutztown’s Gareth Lourens.
“They were very physical, so we tried to keep the ball wide and not take it into contact. We decided the best thing to do was take as minimal contact as possible.”
The plan worked, as Kutztown owned possession, pace and the scoreboard against Mizzou, beating the Tigers 38-7.
The former match was a hotly contested battle between two of the best teams in the competition. Davenport prop Ryan Hargraves scored the game opener in the opening half, which was spent mostly in Utah’s end of the field.
Directly after intermission, JP Eloff streaked up the touch line for a long-distance try, extending the Panther lead to 10. Utah’s Don Pati got the Utes on the board not long after, escaping the clutches of Eloff on his way.
Davenport held on for the win, but Eloff got up wobbly after a late, unwrapped tackle in the game’s final minutes.
