New York City - Led by the adroit tactical and point scoring kicks of flyhalf Adam Siddall (17 points), host Old Blue posted an impressive 37-17 Elite Cup win over the visiting Boston RFC.
The game was played at Columbia University’s Baker Field in upper Manhattan, and was part of Old Blue's 50th Anniversary celebrations.
Old Blue went out to a 6-0 lead when Adam Siddall slotted penalty goals from 35 and 25 meters, respectively, following Boston infractions in the sixth and fifteenth minutes.
Old Blue’s scored again in the 21st minute when they were awarded a penalty try after Boston was warned for repeated infractions while trying to defend their line. Siddall’s conversion increased the host’s lead to 13-0.
Following a blocked Boston clearing kick, Old Blue extended its lead to 20-0 in the 23rd minute when wing Gareth Stoppani touched down and Siddall converted, 20-0.
Boston finally got on the board in the 26th minute when flyhalf Rich Lobb slotted a penalty goal, 20-3.
The second half was much more evenly contested.
Old Blue did, however, get on the board first, a second minute penalty by Siddall increasing the host’s lead to 23-3.
Down, but showing plenty of fight, Boston responded in he fourth minute with a try by prop Anthony Purpura that Rich Lobb converted, 23-10.
Old Blue came back with a try in the 17th minute. After taking a pass from center Dan Freed-Pastor, replacement wing Derek Lipscomb made a nice run and touched down at the conclusion of a 60 meter movement. Siddall’s conversion brought Old Blue’s lead to 30-10.
Old Blue upped its lead again in the 25th minute when flanker Harry Clouston touched down after multiple drives on Boston’s line from the five. Adam Siddall’s conversion brought Old Blue’s lead to 37-10.
Down but not out, Boston would have the final word. Flanker Max Silvera crossed for a try in the 33rd minute and Rich Lobb converted, bringing the final tally to: Old Blue 37, Boston 17.
