Georgetown Downs Colgate
Colleges - Men's DII College

Georgetown beat Sweet 16-bound Colgate 22-20 Saturday. The Hoyas got off to a slow start allowing Colgate to run in the game's first three tries in a time span when they were only able to muster three points off of a penalty kick.

Georgetown sophomore prop Sebastien Hardinger was finally able to punch in a try late in the first half, which, in addition to missed conversions by the Raiders, allowed them to stay in the game, leaving the Hoyas down at 15-8 at halftime.

Colgate was the first to score in the second half giving them a 20-8 lead and supreme confidence. The Hoyas were able to chip away at that confidence, however, when after hovering around the opponent's goal line they were finally able to force a penalty try followed by a conversion to cut the lead to five.

After getting the ball back, Georgetown fought its way to the goal line and after numerous forward picks close to the ruck and short yardage plays. Junior scrumhalf Chris Jeffrey was able to punch it in for the score and knot the game at 20-20. A clutch conversion from junior flyhalf Jack Sheridan gave the Hoyas a 22-20 lead with two minutes left in the match.

After the ensuing kickoff, Georgetown was unable to hold on to the ball for long as Colgate forced a turnover with time to spare. A long run put Colgate within striking distance and as time ran out, Colgate was still driving down the field.

When they were 10 meters out, the Colgate flyhalf attempted to kick it over the Georgetown defense and into the try zone for his Raiders to chase down. The ball fell short of the goal line, however, and right into the hands of senior hooker Mike McGilvery who had the field awareness to call a mark and get a free kick to end the game.

The Hoyas were eliminated from automatic qualifier contention in the Potomac Conference semifinals, but could apply for an at-large bid. A win over a tournament team would surely help in such an effort.
