UMW Wins Key Cardinals Clash
Colleges - Men's DII College

In an important game in the Cardinals Collegiate Conference this past weeked, the University of Mary Washington (UMW) beat previously unbeaten Old Dominion University (ODU), 25-14.

UMW got on the scoreboard first when Ryan Miller slotted a penalty kick from 25 meters (3-0, UMW).  ODU struck back at the 12 minute mark as flyhalf David Roddy went weak side from a scrum, scoring under the posts.  John Zummo added the conversion to make the score 7-3, ODU.

UMW regained the lead when prop Arthur Deegan followed a break by UMW fullback, Luke Bressen, and took the pass to score a try.  The conversion was missed (8-7, UMW).  The lead again changed hands when ODU’s No. 8 Michael Rigual scored a try under the posts.  Zummo made the conversion to move ODU into the lead, 13-8.  UMW closed the gap just before halftime using a driving maul off a lineout that allowed UMW flanker and captain, Ben Britten, to score a try (14-13, ODU).

For the opening 20 minutes of the second half, both teams struggled to break through each other’s defense.  Finally, UMW made a break down the sideline and wing Todd Lancaster scored a try in the corner.  Again the conversion was missed but UMW clung onto an 18-14 lead.  At the 30 minute mark, UMW had a lineout deep in the ODU end and ran a peel play off the throw.  Nick Ryan took the ball and barreled over for the try.  Mary Washington flyhalf Christophe Perdu, their third kicker of the day, made the conversion, giving UMW a 25-14 lead.  UMW played strong defense for the last 10 minutes and came away with a tough 25-14 conference victory.  No. 8 Ryan was the Man of Match.

In the only other conference match, VMI came out hitting on all cylinders scoring a dominating 75-15 win over the University of Richmond.  VMI points came from 11 tries and 10 conversions.  Ray Donahue led all scorers with 25 points on 10 conversion and try.  VMI also got 2 tries each from John Vernon, Pat Minnock, Samuel Trumps and one try each from Kyle McCarthy John Neatrour, Trae Patterson, and Luke Bobbitt.

Heading into the last weekend of conference play, the final seeding for the conference play-offs in the spring are wide open.  Current conference leader, Longwood plays winless James Madison.  A win secures the #1 seed for Longwood.  If Longwood falters, UMW, ODU, Radford, or VMI could jump into the #1 spot
