Palmer College gave up the first try, but turned things around after that and absolutely throttled the Norfolk Blues to the tune of 57-10 Saturday in the Men's DI Club Round of 16.
Led by their back row of former Penn State star Auggie Manelick, former Kutztown star James Fitzgerald, and former UW-Whitewater star Ryan Duklas, Palmer scored five first-half tries, including three in an eight-minute spree, to earn a spot in Sunday's Quarterfinals.
Duklas did the most damage, scoring four tries from No. 8, while Michael Junk added two and Manelick, Chad London, and Nichols Bigrigg all scored once for Palmer.
Norfolk got on the board first as veteran Ed Stockunas scored in the 10th minute. IN the second half, Fred Wintermantel also touched down.
Tries: Dukilas 4, Junk 2, Manelick, London, Bigrigg
Convs: Stringer 4, Keys 2
Tries: Stockunas, Wintermantel
In the other match in the same bracket, the Chicago Lions easily took care of the Boston Irish Wolfhounds.
Still on a roll after winning three straight playoff games to get to this point, the Lions scored in the first five minutes as they put wing Jordan Highberger away.
Flyhalf Nick Viviani added a penalty for an 8-0 Lions lead, and when Wolfhounds center Kiwa Oakes touched down in the 12th minute, it looked as if we had a battle on our hands.
That remained the case through most of the first half, as two teams with a lot of pride in their scrum and their defense battled to a standstill.
Seven minutes before halftime, Chicago lock Jason Isaacson scored, and with Viviani's conversion Chicago led 15-5.
Still not running away with it, Chicago put the game away in the first ten minutes of the second half. Isaacson scored again, and then so did flanker David Whitney. Viviani converted both, it was now 29-5, and the rout was on.
The Wolfhounds, not helped by the loss of scrumhalf George Needs after only seven minutes to an injury, ran on the subs at that point.
The Lions wing Ed Cassidy touched down twice to finish off the scoring, Chicago Lions 43 Boston Irish Wolfhounds 5.
Tries: Highberger, Isaacson 2, Whitney, Cassidy 2
Convs: Viviani 5
