Beaverton Impresses at Oregon Quarters
School Age - Girls

Rugby Oregon contested the first round of playoffs for the division one girls’ high school division, and all of the higher-ranked teams won their quarterfinals. The next round of playoffs will be contested next weekend.

Beaverton won big at the Oregon quarterfinals.

League-leading Beaverton posted the biggest win of the weekend, defeating last-ranked Columbia County 68-0. The Lady Barbarians sent seven players across the tryline and got great performances out of sophomore Megan Conti, freshman Jessie Sorenson and rookie Rebekah Ondusko. This win was particularly impressive considering the number of regular substitutes who started for Beaverton.

“We started and played the first half with six of our starters on the sideline,” Beaverton coach Greg Tracy said. “We have a rule: If you do not make it to both practices in a given week, then you do not start that weekend. Our seconds really stepped up and contributed to the game. The team really has grown this year after losing so many seniors last season. I am really proud of the way we have played and the showing that the ladies put on the pitch every time we step out to play.”

Beaverton is favored to win the whole thing, having gone 7-0 through the regular season and a version of the mercy rule enforced in five of those matches. Canby, second in the standings, gave Beaverton its closest game during a 24-3 loss.

The rest of the quarterfinals were more competitive. Canby defeated Newberg 45-31, Battleground topped North Clackamas 24-10 and Reynolds bettered West Linn 37-20.

The semifinals will be contested next weekend and we expect to see Beaverton and Canby exit Saturday with wins. During the regular season, Beaverton defeated Battleground by the mercy rule, while Canby beat up Reynolds 49-17. The state championship will be contested the following weekend on May 19.
