Cal Poly, San Diego State, Santa Clara and St. Mary’s all recorded lopsided victories on the weekend.

Santa Clara beat Sacramento State 45-17 to improve to 2-0 in California play, St. Mary’s walloped UCSB 64-3 to improve to 4-0, Cal Poly dismantled UC Davis 58-8 and is now 4-0 and San Diego State beat Stanford 78-0 to get to 2-1.

“The boys did well. We executed some of our plays very well and made some good breaks,” said Cal Poly coach Dave Burnett.

“The good thing about today was we finished those breaks. In previous weeks we’d make some line breaks and struggle to make that last pass and finish it off, but today the boys did very well in finishing it off.”

Some California teams are trying to put some tough lessons they’ve learned out of conference to use in conference. Numerous teams, Cal Poly included, have been beaten handily by Cal, while San Diego State, for example, has fallen to Arizona and BYU.

“We’re at the point where we’re just trying to get better each week. Last week we gave away a ton of penalties, we ended up having a yellow card, we missed a lot of opportunities,” said SDSU coach Matt Hawkins.

“So for us, I’m happy we got better than last week, because we’re nowhere near where we want to be, but the goal was to start winning. We did that last week, we’ve done it again this week and we’re getting better, so now we’ve just got to keep that going.”

Burnett said his Mustangs haven't lost confidence, despite losing big to Cal.

“We came into the Cal game confident we could handle them for a bit. We made a couple of line breaks, but their game was different, so the boys were disappointed after that. Stanford was quite different, obviously, but the guys are very confident.”

There are some important match-ups coming up in the next few weeks in the California: St. Mary's and Cal Poly meet on March 9 and SDSU clashes with the Gaels March 16.
