St. Mary's hammered Chico State 83-7 Saturday in a game that was certainly a friendly, but carried with it some serious ramifications.
The Gaels were speedier and more deadly, by far, but that could be chalked up to, in part, the fact that St. Mary's has some rugby under their belts while Chico has played not at all.
Chico State in fact were just filling in for a men's club that canceled on the Gaels.
"I think the scoreline misrepresents how close the contest was at times," said St. Mary's Head Coach Tim O'Brien. "Obviously playing SFGG last week helped our cause."
The Gaels still have a lot of work to do. They are now without captain Andrew Cook, who has graduated, and Kelly Harris and Mike Haley are stepping into the leadership roles.
St. Mary's are now 4-1 having also beaten Diablo, OMBAC and Old Aztecs, while losing 49-19 to SFGG a week before. They face Olympic Club on Saturday.
