Army Edges ASU to Sweep in AZ
Colleges - Men's DI College


The West Point rugby team capped off their two-game trip to Arizona with a 16-9 defeat of Arizona State Sunday.

Played in front of a good crowd at the ASU soccer stadium, the game featured PA announcers, the ASU Devil Dancers and had all the trappings of a varsity-level sporting event.

The teams were deadlocked at 6-6 by halftime and ASU led 9-6 with 15 minutes to go. Then Army ran in the only try of the game to lead 13-9, and held on to win 16-9. Army flyhalf Will Holder scored the try and kicked all of Army's points, as well.

“It’s been great to get out into some warm weather,” said Army Director of Rugby Rich Pohlidal. “We’ve used this time to test some combinations and work on our pattern and putting some shape to the game. We’ve experimented with some different looks defensively, and worked a lot on coming together as a team. So overall it’s been very beneficial.”

Army was hosted by both Arizona (West Point won 54-17) and Arizona State. And they were cheered on by West Point graduate groups in both towns.

For the weekend, perhaps the breakout performer was center Drake Fleming, a sophomore who has shown good commitment and vision in the midfield
