Randalls Island, New York, NY - In an exciting, wide-open match between two well-coached teams, #2-ranked Xavier High School of New York City defeated #6-ranked Greenwich HS of Connecticut 33-19 on a bright, sunny, spring morning on Randalls Island in New York City.
Following a tightly contested first half from which it emerged with a one-point (13-12) lead, Xavier outscored its nearby Connecticut neighbor 20-7 in the second half.
Xavier’s 33 points came on six unconverted tries by six different players, plus a single penalty goal.
Scrumhalf Mateo Gowland accounted for nine of Greenwich’s 19 points (try, two conversions), while Joe Kelly and Alex McMurray also touched down for the visitors.
Xavier opened the scoring in the third minute when flanker Rob Irrimesco touched down at the conclusion of 70-meter, multi-pass movement, 5-0. Xavier’s lead went to 10-0 in the 12th minute when flyhalf Jim Wolfer touched down in the corner at the conclusion of a 50-meter movement.
A penalty goal by Jim Wolfer in the 23rd minute would up Xavier’s lead to 13-0 but Greenwich would then mount a comeback.

Xavier’s lead was reduced to a single point in the 33rd minute when Greenwich intercepted a Xavier pass at midfield and inside center Joe Kelly was able to touch down. The conversion by Mateo Gowland reduced Xavier’s lead to 13-12 as the half ended.
As the second half progressed, Greenwich’s once-promising hopes for victory took some serious hits as Xavier was able to score three consecutive tries.
Xavier’s first try of the period came nine minutes after the restart when scrumhalf Ryan McDade scored in the left corner, following several drives from inside Greenwich’s 15. Xavier 18, Greenwich 12.
Xavier’s lead increased to 23-12 in the 15th minute when Jake DeFonzo touched down. It went to 28-12 in the 20th minute when Ryan Kilgallen scored a corner try at the conclusion of a multi-phase movement.
Down, but still very competitive, Greenwich responded with a try in the 24th minute. Alex McMurray recovered and touched down a ball that had been kicked ahead into Xavier’s try zone. Mateo Gowland’s conversion narrowed Xavier’s lead to 28-19.
Xavier, however, would have the final word, as a try by fullback Dylan Bergstol in the 30th minute would bring the final score to 33-19.
