Greenwich unseated one of the top HS teams in the Northeast as they downed defending national #2 Xavier 31-22 Friday.
Greenwich led 19-10 at halftime, only to see Xavier score twice to take the lead 22-19. Unbowed, the Cardinals scored through wing Nick Richards and Richards touched down again to put the game away late.
“The boys played great, both teams,” said Greenwich coach Joe Kelly. “We just stuck to the basics and it worked. We worked hard on fitness and our defense this year and blessed with good athletes we got it together.”
Sophomore scrumhalf Mateo Gowland was outstanding on the day and inside center Joe Kelly also played well.
“The pack did their job,” added Kelly.
Senior captain and No. 8 Tomas Gowland has his usual strong game, as did senior Matt Diddel, who stepped in as co-captain after Doug Brown went down with an injury.
The two tries from Richards sealed the win, for sure, but Kelly also pointed to the hard work of props Kyle Cammacho and Nick Panella, who “fought to the every end, not letting Xavier’s power forwards break the gain line.”
Greenwich is now 8-0, having scored 580 points and given up only 48, almost half of those in this one game against Xavier.
