Checking in Overseas
It’s been a while since RUGBYMag checked in with players overseas.
Many have been active even during the 6 Nations hiatus. Here’s a quick rundown:
Aviva Premiership, England.
Chris Wyles remains a huge part of Saracens, helping them to a win over Exeter last week. He will against start at fullback this weekend against Leicester, who are right behind the 2nd-place Saracens in the standings.
Samu Manoa is in the lineup for Northampton after being rested a week. Manoa lines up at lock for the 6th-place Saints against 7th-place Bath.
Elsewhere in UK
Eric Fry started for London Scottish last weekend against the Cornish Pirates, and was part of a stirring comeback won by London Scottish 20-17.
The club has no game this weekend and will play against March 2.
Robbie Shaw started at scrumhalf for Richmond in their National SSE Div I game against Coventry, won by Richmond 34-33. Richmond sits 11-8-3 and 5th in the league.
Cambridge University lost 39-5 to the British Army Thursday Feb 21. Nate Brakeley started at lock for Cambridge. Jason Law did not play for Oxford University in their win over Crawshays 26-17.
Sebastien Rodwell, a former Italy U20 player who qualifies for the USA, has been starting regularly at center for Hartpury College in England.
Former USA U20 captain Will Magie is now captaining Leeds University and playing flyhalf. He had a solid game in the final league match in the BUCS Premier North A, which includes college and academy teams. Leeds lost to Northumbria 22-16, and finished last in the league at 2-9.
They are set to play Cardiff University Wednesday, Feb 27>
French Top 14
Scott LaValla is a sub again for Stade Francais. The lock/flanker’s Paris club faces Perpignan this weekend, a club linked with USA 7s player Luke Hume.
LaValla subbed on last week in his club’s 30-14 win over Bordeaux.
Taku Ngwenya is set to start for Biarritz against Racing Metro, just as he did in a 15-9 victory over Castres last week.
French Pro D2
Inaki Basauri started for Tarbes in their 33-16 win over Pays d’Aix last week. The result saw Tarbes move up to 5th.
Roland Suniula did not play last week when Auch lost 22-16 to Brive.
The Pro D2 does not play this week.
Derek Asbun has been getting regular minutes, usually off the bench, for University of Cape Town in South Africa. He has been listed as a flanker and a hooker, depending on team needs. Last week he was the hooker sub for UCT as they lost to FNB Ikey Tigers 42-26 in a game that was at one point 26-26.
In Japan, Todd Clever is in his off-season.
Paul Emerick was released from his contact at Wasps earlier this year as he will be unable to play the remainder of the season due to injury.
