The USA Rugby High School All-Americans, sponsored by Aircraft Charter Solutions, went 4-0 today at Rosslyn Park Sevens Open Division in London, England. The HSAAs were in Group C with London Oratory School, Kirkham Grammar School, Robert Clack School and Tasker Milward School.
"This week has seen the players struggle in training as they have tried to adapt to the cold and wet conditions," HSAA Head Coach Salty Thompson said. "However, today saw the team come together as they felt more at home and comfortable in the foreign conditions."
First up for the HSAAs was Kirkham Grammar School. Kirkham, predicted to finish atop Group C, was runner-up in 2009 and has only suffered one defeat this year. The HSAAs handed the English side its second defeat thanks to tries from Zack Webber, Joe Kelly, David Kucharski, Calvin Whiting, David Todd and Niall Barry. Mitchel Gusman added two conversions for a 34-5 final score.
In the second match of the day, 2002 runner-up London Oratory followed up its 50-0 win against Tasker Milward School with a 17-0 shutout defeat to the HSAAs. Billy Maggs, Kucharski, and James Viafale scored the HSAA tries and Gusman converted another.
In their closest match of the day, the HSAAs downed Robert Clack School 17-5 to move to 3-0 with one match left to play. Like London Oratory, Robert Clack School was handed its first loss of the afternoon by the HSAAs, who received tries from Gusman, who also supplied another conversion, Barry, and Kelly.
The HSAAs continued their hot streak with a 50-5 win against Tasker Milward School to finish as the only undefeated team in Group C. The only Welsh side in Group C, Tasker Milward School has not won a single game. Maggs and Kucharski each scored two tries, Gusman scored a try with six conversions, and Kelly, Barry, and Adjei also added to the scoring.
By winning the group, the HSAAs advance to the knockout stage at Rosslyn Park Sevens for the second year in a row. The HSAAs will face Wales’ Ysgol Gyfun Gwyr on Friday in the first elimination match. Ysgol Gyfun Gwyr also went through the group stage undefeated.
