Where many regions are 7s-centric this time of the year, the West Coast has a little more 15s in them. The West Coast Invitational kicks off today in Oregon and lures some of the best U19 and U17 players from California, Oregon and Washington. USA Women’s U20 scouts will be on hand.
The U19 bracket hosts five all-star teams from Northern California, Oregon, Ospreys, Southern California and Washington. Oregon and the Californian sides are also fielding U17 teams. The first day of competition is a round robin, so with four games apiece for the U19 teams, the games are only 22 minutes long. The U17s will play two 45-minute matches.
Southern California is the natural favorite to win both divisions, since high school champion Fallbrook is represented on both Griffins teams. However, all-star teams are a different animal, and it may come down to whichever team had the most preparation time together.
But this competition isn’t so much about the victor; it’s about giving more high-level exposure to the up-and-coming athletes in the region. Stay tuned for teams' feedback and a full recap of the event.
