Cal and Life look so far like they’re the two best teams in the country, and there’s no reason to believe St. Mary’s, BYU or Arkansas State couldn’t put themselves in that conversation in due time. The Gaels took a big step toward being considered in the same echelon as Life and Cal with a 59-10 drubbing of Penn State in Moraga, Calif. Friday. Cal plays the Nittany Lions on Monday, too, so that score could tell us more about how close St. Mary’s is. Arkansas State could certainly make the jump this coming weekend, when the Red Wolves play host to the Running Eagles in Jonesboro, Ark. ASU has looked tidy in meetings with DI-A non-conference opponents Texas A&M and Northern Colorado. BYU hasn’t faltered, either, but their scores are not all that consistent. The Cougars most recently beat Utah State 91-3, and they posted an impressive score line against UCLA earlier this spring, but wins over San Diego State and Texas A&M were closer than they would have been last year. Life didn’t just bolster the idea that they might be the best team in the country by beating Davenport 53-0 Saturday, they assured that there’s a big gap between the top five teams and everyone else. The St. Mary’s/Penn State result did the same. Further down the ranks, UCLA gets bumped up for a very nice road win over Oregon State, Central Washington moves up because it’s undefeated and Davenport lost so handily, Cal Poly jumps ahead on the back of its 5-0 start to conference play, Air Force, Arizona and Arizona State all fall due to recent losses, and LSU drops from the list altogether after losing to South Carolina. Taking the Tigers’ spot is Western Washington, who is undefeated in NCRC play and played Central Washington to a respectable score in the Cascade Cup match a couple of weeks ago.
