Many of the country’s top teams were back in action last weekend. BYU, Cal and Life all registered extraordinarily lopsided victories. While the wins were all impressive, none was impressive enough to shake up the top four. Arkansas State was idle, but the Red Wolves start their season Saturday against Texas A&M. The magnitude of Cal’s win is big, but keep in mind Stanford has lost to Cal Maritime and San Jose State this spring, too. St. Mary’s was also impressive on the weekend, beating Olympic Club 53-11. Outside of an expected loss to San Francisco Golden Gate, the Gaels have been lights out this spring, beating three DI men’s clubs, as well as DI-AA Chico State 83-10. Elsewhere in the Top 10, we’ve corrected an error from our last ranking. We missed some fall results, but have taken them into account and put Penn State above Army. The Nittany Lions beat the Black Knights in the fall. UCLA, San Diego State and Texas A&M were the only ranked teams to lose since our last ranking. UCLA has dropped two games this spring, to Cal and BYU. The Cal match was just 40 minutes long. The Bruins won’t be punished too much for falling to the Bears and Cougars in the same fashion we figure most any team in the country would. However, SDSU played BYU’s top team much closer on Thursday, 41-21. The Aztecs, undoubtedly sore from playing maybe the hardest running team in the country, then climbed into their cars and traveled to Tucson for a second game in three days against a fresh Arizona squad. So, we don’t drop the hammer on 0-2 SDSU. Texas A&M does fall from the list for its home loss to LSU. The Tigers take their place.
