I think it should be noted that I dont think college teams really care about preparing players for the national team. They are looking to win and represent their universities. The point of the CPD was never and will never be as a feeder program for the national team, that will be a byproduct result.

@Cinco - I was just replying to "the truth"'s post of outright lies and fabrications concerning my team. I freely admit bias, and agree that there is no reason I should have to post things about ASU in this article, however maybe I am not the one you should be directing your comment towards.

Feels like we have a train wreck coming with the DI Conferences needing to be formed and approved by June 1 and the CDP teams having until July 1 to determine if they are in the CDP. If a CDP waits unit July 1 to determine if it is out is could find itself without a competition to play in. Leaving them one option - to stay in the CPD.

If the short-term betterment of rugby is the goal, Cal, BYU and two college sides from the other two college regions should play in the Super League. Plus they can play against the Canadian college sides. Lots of other countries use college programs as academies. That being said, the college admins will not like the idea of not playing other traditional college sides.

@the truth- Why would you blatantly lie (troll) like that? Seems odd if you truly care about rugby. ASU had one 5th year senior, and three 4th year seniors. They do however have 4 freshmen on the varsity team. As for the football players, you obviously have no idea as Trevor Kohl just sat down with Coach Lane and Coach Erickson to discuss his future Rugby career and how it will work with football. You obviously just like to stir up hatred toward ASU, and I pity you because it must have been quite difficult to see all the success the devils have enjoyed the last few years. I hope you are able to one day move past your hatred of ASU's success because there is going to be lots more of it in coming years. ASU is using the CPD to increase the visibility of the sport on campus, bringing in new tournaments, players, and even stadiums. There is a bright rugby future in Tempe. Go Devils!

@The Truth- The truth is apparently misleading. There was only one 5th year senior on the entire team. There are a few other graduating 4 year seniors, but nothing out of the ordinary. There were however 4 freshmen starting on the varsity team. As for the football players, you really have no idea about anything, and are just trying to stir hatred toward ASU. The players just had a sit-down with Coach Lane and Coach Erickson to discuss their rugby and football futures. So I believe you are mis-(un)-informed. Sorry that ASU has had tremendous success this year, it must be difficult for you to swallow. I hope you can learn to enjoy the future success of ASU, because there will be a lot. The club is using the CPD to boost visibility of the sport on campus, bringing in new 7's tournaments, as well as rugby specialized stadiums. Go Devils!

The CPD is the best short term way to develop rugby players. The 8-10 top programs are doing that in a way the rest of college rugby cannot. The D1 conference model is the long-term way to grow the sport and bring it closer to the mainstream. Contract the CPD to about 16 teams, let the D1 restructure continue, and be patient.

also - whats the goal of the cpd/college rugby in general? establish rugby as a mainstream college sport within the traditional framework? OR is it be a feeder to the RSL/Eagles to improve USA Rugby in international comp. ? These two potential goals don't easily go hand-in-hand...but maybe we can work something out.

"You should throw northeastern's name into that list as well for rugby east. they beat boston college twice this fall with a young team" - totally wrong approach. We shouldn't put teams in the CPD based off one mediocre or even great season, or 1-2 good classes of talent. CPD should admit strong programs (committed coach/leadership w/ability to run program [versus school's that prevent 'student run organizations' from being led/run efficiently by a coach and require that students run ALL aspects of the club], active alumni, school support, access to fields, consistent campus interest [players + fans], convenient location and $$$). Very few programs have demonstrated these traits + consistent winning over a 5-10 year period. In regards to chip3 and wl13's comments - we all know - unfortunately - neither of those Boston schools are established enough on or off the pitch to join, compete or remain in the CPD. No worries though, most programs aren't. Lets not get too excited...
