In the U.S. teams decide what level of competition they participate in, not USA Rugby. This applies to men's and collegiate rugby. There is no incentive to compete and play for a promotion to a more prestigious level. USA Rugby has no formal rules for competition to promote the attainment of CPD or Super League status (it should be a BIG deal) or to remove weaker teams from top divisions to allow up and coming teams to rise to the top. Some teams are happy to stay in lower divisions and compete for a national championship instead of moving up to face tougher competition. The problem the CPD faces is that the top teams won't be challenged until other universities become motivated to compete with them by granting varsity status to their rugby teams. USA Rugby must create promotion and relegation standards for men’s and collegiate rugby and then enforce them.

I don't think people realize that a 10-team league will never be able to be marketed or garner any sponsorship. Will it be greater competition? yes. But a real sponsor will never sign on to a league with only 10 schools, too many of which are not brand name schools. The selling point of the CPD should be that is it, hands down, the TOP competition in the coutry, featuring the best college rugby teams, including many brand name schools and traditional rivalries. Look at what the CRC is doing, the seel the tournament based on all the teams invited regardless of talent level.

(continued) I like Option B. For the teams that have the financial means coupled with the ability to possibly fall in the top 8 of the CPD, then rock on. That's probably 15 teams. It just doesn't make much sense for the other half of the 31 teams to follow that path.

The message may be unpopular, but I think it just the truth whopping everyone upside the head - it makes little to no sense for the majority of the 31 teams that were in the CPD this year to return next year. The options go something like this: a) Return to CPD. Pay for expenditures likely 1.5, 2, or even 3 times as high as expenses under a tighter geographical territory. Hope to have a .500 record at the end of the season. Do not advance to any playoffs. b) Drop down to D1. Play in a tighter geographical area, saving money on transportation and lodging costs. Play more recognizable rivals. Be favored or at least in the mix to advance from the respective union. Advance to a national tournament.

@ CPDone To eliminate that many teams and create a 10 team CPD would be an awful mistake. I understand that there were blowouts all around the country this year, but speaking from the position of the CPD East, there was a great deal of parity in the competition. This year Navy and Army ran out ahead of the pack, last year it was Delaware and Penn State. Kutztown is equally dangerous on any given year. By eliminating teams based on their performance in one year, your robbing teams of the opportunity to develop young squads and compete for the chance at a national title. For what? Because your afraid of blowouts? It was the first season, there are going to be some growing pains. Maybe a couple teams should drop to develop more, but not 21 of them. Also, that ten team league you named would inspire the interest of such a small population that national marketing would be near impossible.

@Veritas Your reply to the comments by CPDone and oldboy make you look ignorant. They have opinions and you are making judgements about them. Grow up. We can only hope you are some college kid coming off a binge drinking session and not actually an adult working with college kids in the game.

(Sorry OIdMan: Didn't mean to diminish the global significance of your own "Division XXVM Regional Assistant Vice Championship") CPDone's negativity towards anything that resembles synchronized ambition is a hold-over from of the collective mediocrity that plagued collegiate rugby until recently. (aka: "Boo hoo...other programs are more organized, committed and serious than our team.") Why the obsession an worry about divisions that are higher than yours? If your club wants to play at a higher level, then do it. And if you don't, back-off on the spite towards those that are choosing to make their rugby better and more competitive. How does bagging on CPD help you recruit? Get fit? Get campus recognition? Get alumni support? In fact -- it doesn't. All it does is expose your "Div 1" program for what it is. Not as good as your Div 1 label would suggest. Your stack of resumes from job seekers? Yeah right: You're a regular captain of industry.... bu ha ha ha..

[quote name="Veritas"]"CPDone" is yet another collegiate rugby participant (meaning = non-athlete) feasting his diet of meager expectations. While the relative cost of CPD is higher than our cherished traditions of awarding "Division XXVM Regional Assistant Vice Championships," having low expectations and commitments is probably why his jealousy of CPD teams (and corresponding beat downs of his own school) continues. Such a productive reply to a sincere comment. Very mature. What college did you attend? Just want to eliminate them from my stack of resumes of job seekers.

CPD is a reasonable commitment compared to other previously fringe sports that have been emerging over the past two decades (Lacrosse anyone?) Yo, CPDone -- Keep playing for your "Tommy Boy" rugby club. While the rest of the college programs get much better, much fitter AND have more fun in the fine social traditions of the sport.

What management is that? I hope that someone had the stones to stand up and say that the teams needed to take charge of the CPD themselves - USAR has done a really poor job. Instead of cost sharing, use that money to find a really good sports marketer whose salary is commission based. Todd Bell gets the blame for not finding sponsors but thats not his job, he has far more on his plate than to just look after CPD teams. Most of hose teams have the resources to look after themselves, its teams that cannot make the CPD that need his help.
