@dh2 - who is "forcing" FBS schools into Div I? If a school like Northwestern decides to remain in Div II, they are free to do so. No one will stop them. But when the day comes that a school like Northwestern rises to the top of Div II, they won't be playoff eligible beginning in 2012-13, and will have to decide if they wish to remain in Div II or move up to Div I. Experience tells us that teams who make the playoffs at a lower level are able to compete right away at the next level.
Playing in the ACRL as a D1 rugby team did not ruin the experience of players at Wake Forest. In fact, most players would tell you it was the coolest thing about their college rugby experience, despite only winning one league game this season (which, by the way, is as many league games as the Wake basketball team won...) They'd rather play in Division 1 against teams like Carolina and Maryland than in D3 against teams like Guilford College and UNC-Pembroke. And I am confident in our ability to find success on the pitch in the ACRL. If we can be competitive at Wake, then any of the other schools mentioned can do it as well. If they don't want to do it and just want to play recreational rugby, they have that option as well. Pat Kane Head Coach Wake Forest University Men's Rugby

I wholly agree that USA rugby should make decisions based on the idea that we play this game for fun. It is an idea that we seem to be loosing sight of as the "growth" of the game is celebrated. I have been thinking about this specifically in regards to the restructuring of college divisions, forcing schools with FBS varsity teams to play DI. That decision ruins the experience of smaller schools whose athletics departments have big budgets despite their small student body (ie Duke,Wake, Vandy, Northwesern). Those schools may never find on pitch success in DI. USAR made the right call here, lets see them keep it up going forward.
