Id say ASU did a bang up job, i mean they played BYU and gave them a run for their money. Considering BYU's history ASU gets massive props from me Oh and the point that 'BYU wasnt trying, or that ASU's tries were just from blatant stupid, lazy BYU mistakes" is ridiculous and in poor taste. After playing in the CPD I can say NO ONE shows up to a game like its some sort of a joke. And i dont think weathered and tried team like BYU would come soft at all. Id say they just got surprised, but still handled business.

Whereas I would typically want to boast and emphasize such a stat, I must say I was fairly disappointed with BYU's big boys against ASU ... no support on initial contact in offensive/defensive match-ups, no solidarity in the rucks/mauls, and sloppy tackling ... looked very sluggish and not playing in a consistent, unified way. Size does matter: it can actually work against you when your head and heart aren't in it, and when individualism overrides the fortitude to play as a team.

There are several keys to beating Cal. A physical defense is important. Cal makes big hay off the hand-off while in contact, especially by the forwards. BYU needs to pin the Cal players' arms to prevent the hand-off to the Cal runners hitting the line with pace. If they can't disrupt the timing of the hand-off, it's going to be a long night. Also, the Cal forwards do a terrific job of supporting one another's runs, making the tackler pull and keep two or three guys down instead of one. When BYU supports their forward runners, they do very well as well. I've always felt that attention to set pieces are key to BYU-Cal match-up. Utah did relatively well to control most of their offensive line-outs. When BYU won in 2009, they only lost one offensive lineout and managed to steal one Cal lineout. I imagine the scrums will be a wash. Both teams have talent out wide, but Cal's wingers have more experience and are bigger.

Unlessm BYU can disrupt Cal's flow of the game, I do not see them beating the Bears. Cal is simply too good at the break down and rarely make mistakes out of their set pieces. In order for the Cougars to compete, they must be physically aggressive in defense. Aggressive enough to make the Cal attackers think twice about running the ball.

wow lots of BYU fanboys up in here. It was a good game both ways, best collegiate game I've seen I think ever. Watch out, ASU isn't going anywhere and will only get better. They're a younger team with a lot of players coming back, it would be a huge mistake for anyone to write these guys off.

Good call Utah man. Imagine if Mike Sua would stop pretending to be a back and Scrum half and hit the ruck with the same passion as Davies and Lubbe. He'd be headed over seas in a heart beat. I was perplexed as to why I saw the mighty mites in every major possession preserving ruck. After the forwards watch that tape they should be ashamed. I won't even start on the lackadaisical approach I observed throughout the final four when it comes to withstanding the counter ruck.

I agree with a lot of the observation. However, I believe the mentality was more like an older brother who is used to winning fights with little brothers (to the tune of 90+ to 0) wondering why little brother was putting up a good fight. I can just hear the BYU team mentality, "You mean we're going to have to try this time?" They have gotten used to rolling over so many opponents that they have become mentally complacent. Next year I really hope they schedule more Super League and Canadian teams so that they can play closer games where smarts, strategy, and heart win the day. Trust me I watched the whole game and the only scores ASU got where created by absolutely boneheaded mistakes and laziness on the part of BYU. Take out those 2 mistakes(lazy kick out of the back, and absolutely no participation on a counter maul)and the game would have been a blowout. The BYU giant is consistently slow to wake up. I'd like to see them running at full speed from kickoff to the final whistle.

I felt that the teams were roughly even in skill, but that BYU's recycle rate was a bit higher, and, because Davies and Lubbe, despite the diminutive size, hit the rucks along with the flankers, BYU had a bit of an advantage in the go-forward. I saw the tiny twins repeatedly pull and roll much bigger men off the ruck to preserve possession. I thought the ASU did a better job of forcing the action in defensive rucks, while BYU got upfield faster and overall played a more up-tempo defensive game. BYU also had a slight edge in tactical kicking. I repeatedly marveled at how close the ASU chargers got to Davies before he kicked the ball, but he seemed absolutely fearless as he put 21 points up on the board. I don't think that there is a team that BYU respects (outside of Cal, of course) more than ASU. What a matchup! Now, if we can get them to face each other every year, or maybe twice a year. I'd pay to see that!

ASU's #7 is about 5'10'' 180..8 is about 6'1'' 220, and 6 is about 5'11'' 190..compare those to the BYU flankers please..ASU's flankers are just more skilled..BYU is just all about physicality and no smarts...at a certain point, physicality takes over..watch out for ASU next year when they have all but three starters returning and are getting 5 HS. All Americans and more.

It was interesting to watch the expressions on the BYU players faces after the first 10 minutes. Not grim determination in the face of an overwhelming ASU onslaught. They were smiling. As if to say, OK, boys, this is why we play this game. ASU is going to bring it, and will bring the trash talk as well. We'll let our actions speak for us. No one has trained harder than we have, no team will outwork us on the field. This is our game. They're going to come straight at us all night, and we're going to take it to them right back. They're going to hit every ruck; we're going to hit every ruck. They're going to lay the wood tackling, and so will we. May the better team win. And it did. BTW, the Africaners came at Shaun Davies early, blasting him on 3 or 4 of the first plays. He smiled, then picked himself up and proceeded to give them merry hell the rest of the night, with his boot and with his tireless energy. What a player!
