@Gilitin209 Quite frankly, as a NZer it makes me sick to hear an American college is doing something which is a special part of MY country`s culture. I don`t care if the coach is Maori. I lived and played rugby in Japan but I never even considered doing the haka with Japanese team mates as that would have been disrepectful. And for you ignorant Americans information, Pacific Islanders and Maori are different. It`s like saying Japanese and Chinese are the same when they`ve got quite different cultures, languages etc. Various Pacific Islands have their own pre-game challenges, quite distinct in style from the haka. Infact I know Pacific islanders here (NZ) absolutely hate to hear their challenges described as "haka". So just because there are many Pacific Islanders on the BYU team has no bearing on doing/having the right to do a haka. I`ve faced haka in NZ but I would never respect a haka done by a bunch of Americans to a NZer!

@wow the way they preformed the haka was what was disrespectful. No one would argue the islander in their blood, but to walk to within a foot of their opponents and preform the haka is incredibly insulting, If it is a tradition, perform it to the best of your own teams' ability, but let the other team make their own decision about how to respond, and to incite your opponents is incredibly disrespectful. Against most rugby teams, that would start a brawl pre match.

Read the comments, this has already been established. BYU has the right to do the haka, no one said otherwise. However, how they conducted the haka was somewhat inappropriate. In the end, it was an unfortunate situation for many reasons. Either way, can we move on? That game is over, BYU is hopefully gonna carry the torch for the western conference, and ASU is looking to improve on their first season in the CPD.

@farsidefan1 Arizona State University quite before the kick-off when they turned their back and didn't front up to the BYU haka. Totally pathetic display by the boys from Arizona State and their coach Gary Lane who stood in front of them urging them not to face the challenge. Watch the film on YouTube. What was he thinking?

"What would you do to your coach if he made you look like that in front of your opponent?" Seriously? The players do the Haka as a sign of respect! They have EVERY right to do, or not to do the Haka. The coach doesn't force it. The players do it of their own free will, because most of them DO have pacific islander in their blood. Saying they don't have a right to do the Haka before the game is like saying Navy players should never be allowed to sing the national anthem before their games! Well, maybe it isn't THAT extreme, but everyone on or around the team takes the Haka VERY seriously, and the fact that people disrespect it this much...

Love it the hokey pokey as a retort to the haka! Who cares who does the haka, lame anyway. The only team that did it to one of my teams got beat down by 50. BYU is 3/4 pac island anyway, it's fitting they honor where they will go back to after school, thanks.

I think this is getting blown a bit out of proportion by everyone. So BYU is doing a haka before their game... who cares? Dozens if not hundreds of teams across the US at the collegiate, high school, and men's club level. I would never do one personally, because it doesn't really apply to me, but being on the receiving end of plenty of haka's, they aren't that big of a deal and I've never found one intimidating. In fact, I remember a time in high school when we did the "hokey pokey" after the opposing team's haka. A little disrespectful in retrospect, but a little funny. Point is, this is just getting blown way out of proportion like alot of things on rugbymag, bottom line BYU is gonna stomp Navy and likely everybody else until they get to play Cal and then they got about a 50/50 shot at winning that in my eyes.

As you have correctly stated, it is upon each team to make a pregame ritual of their own if they choose. BYU, having many common religious and demographic themes has chosen a haka. Good on them. Enjoy, I know it gets them and their fans pumped up, but dont expect the other teams to play along. No one on these pages has told BYU that they should or shouldn't do the Haka, it was people exclaiming "How dare they!" when ASU refused to buy in to another team's pre-game ritual. Enjoy your Haka BYU, I will admit that it is a very good one, but other teams have no reason to play along just to pump BYU up.
