hmmm- Might wanna go back to the drawing board on that insult, its not quite working out for you. Life must really suck for you with ASU consistently winning, and finishing ranked in the top 10 (higher than I assume your team finished). Its okay, i'm sure if you call Gary Lane up he'd be more than willing to help you get your program back on the winning track. Keep your head up in the meantime.

One of the most important things a college rugby program needs is a large student population to draw athletes from, which a good program can turn into rugby players. Some schools have nearly 60K people as a student body at their university and they still can't punch above their weight. Some even were in D2 for a few years.

]Oso, i stand corrected. Gilitan, the problem with trying to do that is, most schools aren't willing to try to work with the programs. my team has been around sense 1998 at my university, at one point we were in good with the school, then bam, no funding from the school at all. they gave us a field. we are doing everything else you suggest/say. but they don't car about that. they are more interested in what is going to bring money/recognition to the school. cause thats all a university is, is a business. that is why they allow football programs. they bring in large amounts of money to the school during the season. BYU and the south field, they have the followers to be good at what they bring to the table for the university, to get into the south field you have to buy tickets. and a lot of the time the stadium is packed. I am pretty sure it is closely the same with Cal.

Honestly people, BYU is where they are because they laid the foundation for a solid program, and backed it up. You think access to the gym and field was just handed to them? It prolly took years to build the relationship between the school and the team. The question isn't why does BYU have certain "advantages," its why aren't many schools not trying to do the same thing? The CPD is only a showpiece, real progress in college rugby will come when individual teams decide to treat themselves like high level athletic teams. This means building relationships at the school, marketing, sponsorships, partial scholarships, tuition waivers, access to weight rooms, ect. BYU and Cal are first class programs. They have built great clubs, and their players act accordingly. Let's see other clubs (and there are some currently working on this) complain less about what these top level clubs get, and actually try to even the competitive field for themselves.

Just a bit of a correction. BYU doesn't give full-ride scholarships. The Cougar Rugby Foundation helps out a few needy kids each year with tuition, but every one of them has a part-time job (up to 20 hrs per week) to pay for everything else. There are no full rides at BYU. And, while the team does get to use the varsity weight room, they are at the bottom of the priority in their access to the indoor practice facility, after intramural soccer, for instance. They get the place when nobody else is using it. They get a small stipend from the University that they supplement with donations from boosters and alumni to pay the bills. They have a cordial relationship with the Athletic administration, but there is a vast difference between full-ride athletes and BYU rugby player--except in one thing. BYU rugby players work at least as hard and as long as their NCAA counterparts, for a lot less recognition.

tosh, byu recruits. just like a lot of other schools. they have the money to give full ride scholarships because of the way the BYU athletic department is set up. also the BYU rugby team has the ability to us the football programs training center, and probably one of the largest indoor field facilities in the west. when you have a excellent rep like the BYU rugby team, they don't need to buy their players, the players go to them. BYU has built its program up from the ground just like all other teams in the CPL. I don't go to BYU, but I go to a university about 10 min away and play on their team, so this i do know.
