The real story at present, as far as BYU is concerned, is actually the Women's Cougar Rugby team fighting to get to their first National Title match ever. There's the real story of struggle and opposition ... Go Lady Cougars!!!

This is the most legitimate comment in this whole thread. All the other comments are a pile of rot, attempting to debate an issue that is actually a dead non-issue. Yes, I'm responding after the game just finished with BYU winning, 80-0. But no offense to Alex, ASU didn't have a prayer and most any serious college rugby fan out there knew it! I even called it 85-0 in a conversation with some friends before the match ... not rocket science, not even biased exaggeration. And sadly for ASU & BYU, it wasn't even a clean match ... pretty sloppy actually in many facets of the game. No disrespect to ASU; we appreciate you, we do ... but the thought of you beating BYU at this stage in the season, on the road at South Field, with the way BYU has been dominating ... well, let's just say that was a pipe dream, pure and simple!

Melvan- Just so we are straight, I do not believe the Mission issue was brought up by ASU fans/players. We have no opinion on it whatsoever for the most part. BYU is an amazing program with great players, end of story. I believe the Mission thing is more of an issue with other schools. As ASU is close to BYU, and the Phoenix Metropolitan area has a heavy mormon population (relative to other locales), the mission thing is something that we are used to and understand. I just wanted to make sure you understand where the concerns are from, because I have not heard a word on this topic outside of these boards. Looking forward to the game this weekend.

It is not the Mormon mission and two additional years age that give BYU an advantage. It is all the quality rugby playing Pacific Islanders they get at BYU. If the Mormons had found a proselytizing foothold in East Asian and not the Pacific Islands, BYU would badminton powerhouse and not rugby.

Melvan, ASU does not and has not had any return missionaries in the mens rugby program in the better part of a decade. We would however welcome them just as we would any other player. Im glad you are so informed and wise. Ill take that beer any day.

One more thought....ASU has plenty of returned missionaries in their programs. Always have. The funny thing is that when they moved from the WAC to the PAC-whatever their fan base envisoned many impending championships which NEVER occured. Those poor Cougar fans now in a swamp of misery without the GREAT ASU to buoy them up......... Have another beer on me.....

Wah,wah,wah.......and so the story goes... Poor ASU fans and anyone else that complains our players are older? And of course the missions our kids serve are a breeding ground for creating national championships of evry sort.....ASU has lds kids that serve missions? Yes? As does other schools and no one complains until a BYU team has an opportunity to be successful nationally!? The University of Utah has a a football team with over 50 returned missionaries and NO ONE "ever" complains about their success.........it is only when when BYU has success that cry-baby authors of an article like this complain about the Cougars and some impending success! Go home and have a beer and smoke a cigar and find something really their way. ASU and CAL can do the same and maintain the eligibility standards that benefit BYU. Everyone in the NCAA can do this as well. Quit crying and play football! Wahhhhhhhhhhhh!

As an ASU recent alumni who is older and did my tours overseas before playing for ASU I must say it does give an advantage to older players. By no means does that mean i didnt deserve to be able to play or give me some sort of unfair advantage. This is a path any other player can choose to take. I can say that a mission taken by a BYU player should not be handled any other way. How can some one who puts there lives on hold in the pursuit of a greater good for others regardless if it is for military or religion be told they forfeited an oportunity to play for their college. I share no relgious beliefs with those players but still commend them for the hard chose they made. These players would still be eligible under NCAA guidelines so I'm unsure of what the argument is here. Get educated then make a claim.

Gary Lane is a slam dunk for coach of the year, and probably one of the top 5 collegiate coaches in the country. BYU better not take ASU lightly because Gary is working them hard and they will be prepared. I would be surprised if the game isn't decided in the final minutes. Gary Lane Awesome Coach Great Job!
