EA, I never thought of schools out West/South starting at different times, and breaks. That must be an incredible hardship on their football teams, it's a wonder someone from Pac-10, or the SEC has ever had a good football team. Especially, since they have to squeeze in a full season to four months. Last year, SU went to the sweet 16. Practices started before Labor Day, and their season ended in May. I assume that all Northern quailifiers had to do the same thing, combined with snow from Dec.-March. Also, you state that it's unforunate that the north has something forced on them, but when I suggest something different, you don't want to be forcibly punished. A good master fears the whip.

@Mike Mac: The main reason for spring playoffs is that schools all start at vastly different times in the fall, end at vastly different times, and have varying lengths of breaks. Not to mention that there's no room to squeeze in regional *and* national playoffs with any hope for time to fundraise or plan travel (for nationals). Additionally, fall playoffs would likely not be in the best interest of the game, as most of the country would be stuck with an incredibly short season, and little time to get in the swing of things. Rugby isn't advanced enough yet for college kids to step on the pitch and play games that matter right away. It's unfortunate that teams in the north are forced to do this, but making everyone do it nationally seems a little fool-hardy. Perhaps fall-oriented schools would be better off having their own semi-national playoff if they really wanted to level things. Don't try to forcibly punish the south and west though.

A 'rain plan' should always be implemented, especially if the primary field is suspect, which this one seems to be. If the secondary field was floated early on then there would be nothing to complain about. Maybe this should have been declared the primary field which would have given ample time to plan for regulations markings. It does present itself as a proper venue and not 'rugby in a park.' Yellow rugby lines on a field with yellow soccer lines is sure to be a problem. Proper timing could have produced red or blue rugby markings. If its true that Coach Griffen was in on the venue planning then he has little room to complain.

I say let the west coast play in the spring and the east coast play in the fall. Why in rugby do we have this "everyone plays to be a national championship" mentality? It is not like sponsors and broadcasters are breaking down the door. And don't say that sponsors and broadcasters are on the way because look at where we are now and were we were 20 years ago and there is little change.

Teams that play split seasons can't compete with teams that play progressive seasons that also have the advantage of weather. If that isn't true, then I'm sure that the West coast wouldn't mind changing to a split season with fall playoffs.

ruggerBB - What's your solution? Is it simply don't schedule anything in the Northeast? Or should USA Rugby/University at Buffalo done something different when it was determined the original fields were unplayable?

Minimum requirements at the backup facility seems reasonable to me....and you're right...probably should not schedule an event in Buffalo before May 15th...but according to a previous post Griffin sat on the board that did so, and it's all set now, so a scathing letter to those organizing an event over backup facilites doesn't seem productive.

Get off your high horse and read your law book. Width "not exceeding 70 meters". and "The surface must be safe to play on at all times" And for the record, Buffalo pulled off the NRU club playoffs in three days after the original Rochester venue was covered in snow. Believe it or not, NYS actually pays NRU dues too.
