RNE uses traditional US sports as a guide in determining standings... W/L/T record and head-to-head. We chose a championship on the men's side simply because we felt if the Top 2 teams played early in the season, they deserved to play later in the season, where both had battled an equally challenging schedule. In the future we hope to have 10-12 teams where each team plays 8 games and a single championship game. The focus is on more regular season games and fewer playoffs so all teams play more rugby. Hopefully Div II will move to a Fall Championship so that we can play straight through.

Actually, the ACRL tried the boinus point system last year and it resulted in some odd finishes in the final standings. Maryland finished 1st at 6-1, same record as Clemson who was also 6-1. Maryland had more Super points, so they were ranked ahead, but they also won the head-to-head matchup against the Tigers so not controversy. The next three spots is where it got weird. Virginia Tech finished 3rd based on Super points. Their record was 3-4. Wake Forest finished 4th at 4-3 and UNC finshed 5th at 4-3. Both UNC and Wake beat Virginia Tech. So two teams with better records than Virginia Tech and who beat the Hokies head to head, managed to finish behind them in the conference. Seems strange, but VT was rewarded for scoring alot of tries and keeping every game they lost close. Which I suppose is the point of the Bonus point system. But Boston College sure has to be wondering if its the best way to determine a league champ!
