Trophy I do agree with you that since the close loss to Utah Arizona State's play has fallen off a bit. But if you look at all their close losses to much lower ranked teams, they are all away games. I just think they didn't travel very well and have never played up to their full potential. That being said I think that Arizona State and Central Washington should have a chance to be in the playoffs as they could both upset some teams. If they implemented a wildcard round they would only need to extend the playoffs a week maybe or they wouldn't even have to if they gave the top 2 seeds first round byes. Which I have no problem with because we all pretty much know that Cal and BYU wouldn't lose in the first round anyway. I don't think that having a secondary bracket for a different type of championship or whatever would be good though because like some have said these trips cost money and it would force some teams to pay for trips that maybe they don't even want to bother with.

OK, so let me get this straight, Rutgers #25 beats Kutztown and rises five places in the rankings to #20 while Kutztown in losing to Rutgers stays put at #15? Someone deserves a red card here......

Also, I agree that the financial aspects of a second tier playoff arent realistic. I do like a bowl type setup with say the Pacific 3/4 v. the West 3, ect... Each "bowl" game would be up to the individual teams though. Either way nothing will happen until teams take it upon themselves to schedule exhibition games after the season to see how they truly stack up.

ASU peaked in week one? Then explain how they have beaten everyone else in their conference minus a close game with Utah, and BYU coming up this weekend. They may not have traveled well, but 5-1 with 4 straight wins doesn't really show a tailing off.

What about Claremont, Oklahoma, Ohio State and Wyoming? They should play for a trophy too because if they were in D1, blah blah blah. Also, I think Utah would blow out both Arizona teams on their current form. Look at the comparison of matches against the same opposition. ASU vs. Wyoming 29-0 ASU vs. Colorado State 40-10 Utah vs. Wyoming 97-0 Utah vs. Colorado State 74-19 Utah is surging and ASU peaked week one.

We fans don't necessarily understand just how big a strain the playoffs are on a college club's finances. A 3-weekend playoff as we have now in the CPD can cost the 8th place team $50,000 for three trips to locations that aren't reasonable to travel to by bus. And then there's the time lost from school. And this to get the 9-16 hardware? There are already CPD, Division 1, Division II, and the "sort-of" Division III championships. Teams miss the playoffs, but are motivated to "go the extra mile" the next year, to recruit better, work more with their alumni to raise money for scholarships, etc. You could have a wild-card play-in to account for really deep conferences, but that adds more expense for teams that, so far as we can tell, aren't going to win the thing anyway.

I agree with Rugger7 about extending postseason play to include more teams, but I don't see how it is possible to start the season earlier given how bad the conditions are in the northeast, the mountains and the northwest in early March, let alone late February (how many of those teams even had a chance to practice outdoors before several weeks into the season? In the northeast, fields often aren't ready for play until mid or late March). A better alternative might be to let the top 2 teams in each division play for one set of hardware, and the next 2 teams to play for a second set of hardware (e.g., places 9 - 16). That would also allow everyone to see the depth of the various divisions. My guess is that you'd see the east perform poorly in the top bracket (there are no dominant teams like a BYU, Cal, Life, or ASU), but do very well in the second bracket given the parity of the conference.

How can you say that Utah blew out Arizona State, Utah was losing at half time and really only won by 2 points (except for a last second try). If anything ASU should've won that game if it wasn't for a few key mistakes. Bottom line is that they need to expand the playoffs to maybe include two more wildcard teams. Central Washington and Arizona State are two very good top 10 teams that will not be able to make the playoffs this year. If they were to add more teams they would have to start the season a little earlier though

Totally agree about Utah. They started off the CPD season with an experimental team and won a couple games against the two Arizona games by scores that should have been blow out, but they got their combinations down now and are surging at the right time of the season.
