Richard: Hands down the two best rugby programs in the country? No, not anymore. They have a lot of competition for that title now (see above rankings) and that's the rub. They appear to be running away from it. If not, what are they doing? If it's in the best interest of American college rugby, I'm sure the VC teams will be willing to tell us all about it. Or is this a case of you not knowing anything about it either (because everyone seems to be in the dark) and just wanting to sound like you're in the know?

When it comes down to it, there is not a program in the country that owes anything to anyone other than the kids who will be attending that school and playing for that school. If these schools feel that it is in the best interests of the kids and the school then more power to them. Each team has its own set of challenges whether it be extensive travel, small player pool or a need to satisfy the school itself. IF they can get the best competition for themselves then that is the right thing for them to do. As long as they want to produce good players then it is the right thing for them to do. It is not an exact science.....

Mcfaddeninsuran ce. Yes, Cal and BYU have both left the D1-A. They are the two best rugby programs in the country, hands down. Obviously there is a reason here far higher than your understanding. Everyone called out Cal last year for dropping out, now look at the list of elite teams that have joined them in Navy, Utah, Dartmouth, etc. Restrain from your silly comments of which you have absolutely zero knowledge of.

Salisbury as an honorable mention but not Whitewater, in the six degrees of seperation which is only what 2 Lindenwood the mutual opponent beat WW by 12 and Salisbury by 38 and you even ranked WW ahead in the final season poll and WW is returning about 90% of its first 22...

Givesome, building themselves up? In what way? This seven team grouping does not improve upon the competition found in D1-A. How will they make thousands of dollars? If Cal, Utah, Air Force and BYU are to play Dartmouth, Navy, and Notre Dame there will be some major league travel expenses to contend with. Whatever gate revenue they receive will be dwarfed by those expenses.

Rugbymag has no affiliation with USA Rugby sanctioned competitions(ra ther they are owned by a competitor in NBC). I'm almost certain people care more about those 7 or 8 teams in this country than any other collection of 7 or 8 teams, and I would be impressed if you could prove otherwise. So if rugbymag loses one sourpuss premier content subscriber in you, I think they would be ok with that. Those individual programs are building themselves up, and when that is done across the board then college rugby will be better as a whole. They've found what they believe to be a better competition, and it is their own thoughtful decision to make, not yours. Those teams owe YOU nothing. I doubt your approval means much to them when they are talking about thousands of dollars for their respective clubs.

Preseason rankings are what they are. Don't understand why folks get upset by them. It is an opinion based on educated guess work. So many things can change in the coming weeks and ultimately, they don't mean anything. The games are won on the pitch. So let's just sit back, watch the kids play and reevalutate it at the end of the Spring when we have a Champion to recognize. That being said.....not sure that there is much wrong with saying Life might be the best team in the country.

If you want to cut some slack to the teams who are disrupting the college game by breaking off to do their own thing that's up to you. I'm not interested in pretending that it's okay for five solid D1-A teams to break away from the rapidly improving college game to start something that appears to be pointless and without merit. I also don't want to read in Rugby Mag that any of the quitters are ranked or should be ranked among teams that are actually competing for a national title. If Rugby Mag wants to do a preseason ranking, how about a realistic one instead of a fantasy ranking that will never be proven. Give us D1-A, D1-AA, DII, NSCRO, and Varsity Cup preseason rankings.

I don't understand what your deal is...this is a ranking of teams and has no mention of a National Championship. If these teams were to play eachother, then this is what Rugbymag predicts would happen. Drop the whole act, no one probably cares about your team because they aren't as good.

Cal, BYU, Utah, Dartmouth and Navy can be kings of their self made mole hill but they are irrelevant in the national picture. They chose to take themselves out of the game. It's a shame but, in 2013, those teams do not exist in the National Championship picture.
