Can anyone admit, outside the criticism, that this absolutely great for rugby in the USA? Nothing will be perfect in the beginning, nothing. However, this is a great start for both 1-A and 1-AA. The Varsity Cup will eventually dissolve or just become a sponsored invite only tournamnt during the spring season. School/clubs not participating in the VC will eventually be just as good or better than the teams in the VC. Last time I checked, schools in the VC are'nt throwing full scholarships at the nations best rugby players in the same manner the top SEC schools get the best football recruits. As a HS coach, this is the best thing for convincing student-athletes and their familes that rugby is legit. Its something you can improve upon and pursue post graduation. We, the American Rugby Community, should applaud the efforts of USA Rugby for at least trying. My early prediction: Lindenwoood in the final eight or four.

Dabu, I believe SBCC played in DII last year, with UCSD and Long Beach, who both moved up to Pacific Mountain West. I've seen them play. They are legit. I believe they share coaches from UCSB. I understand they have a full time rugby/academic academy to enable students who would otherwise not get into UCSB have a chance to play while preparing their academic resume for transfer. I think this is a good thing for Rugby. For example, if you look at the PMWC, you either have to have a fat wallet or perfect academic record to be enrolled at those schools. Providing opportunities via the Community College system will open the game to many talented young men.

The idea of having 7 teams in a conference to get an automatic bid is problematic at best. Some conferences are respectable from top to bottom, however many have included sub par teams to meet the magical number. What does it meen if a team wins it;s conference and even goes undefeated if they played 2 teams that would be middle of the road D2 teams along the way.

Allright, allright...enough already! Conferences/divisions/re-alignment under arbritary decisions...it's a mess!! But,the season's here so let's just shut-up and play. We'll all get games. Against teams we'd normally play. Some will be good. Some will be bad. It's college rugby. Teams change. Play your best and hopefully you'll enjoy and be better for it.

Mcfadden what stakes do you have in this? 7 years ago D1A, Varsity Cup, and D1AA conferences were a pipedream but the bar has been raised, and finally the schools are benefitting, too. Are you still convinced BYU and Cal will play for the D1AA championship?
