Let's be very clear: WWU, CWU and OSU are ambitious programs, doing meaningful things to advance the standard and participation in the game. UW has had a progressive cycle of very talented and dedicated coaches (20 years), some solid talent, but an exceptionally low level of ambition for a school of its standing as a major West Coast institution. Arguably, with the possible exception of USC, UW has the longest road to travel before anyone (serious) considers them a promising program. The new coach is just "the next" coach until there's a decision to stop being a "rec" sports club and get the coaches the organizational and financial resources that allow them to coach, not babysit.

@openside- not sure I would say that UW is getting left in the dust. They now have all the tools, so this year could be a big turnaround for them. WSU is at a disadvantage do to geography, although the are really never a pushover. That being said, it is good that WWU is taking rugby serious now, it would be nice to see a solid CWU - WWU rivalry re-emerge.

I would agree with you if youth rugby wasn't growing like it is. The dropping of football at smaller, lesser known schools will trickle down to youth football participation as well. Here in D.C., football is king but there are parents looking for other options. The sport likely to benefit the most may be soccer but we're seeing our fair share of of that trickle with youth rugby this summer. Nobody knows what the collegiate rugby landscape will look like in 10 years but it will be exciting none the less.

The rate these small schools are popping up there won't be any rugby players left for the Big name schools in the future if they don't go Varsity and once that happens the small schools will disapear again

Nice to see the "second tier" NW colleges (Central, now Western) really carving out a place in rugby. UW and WSU kind of getting left in the dust. Personally, I'd like more smaller schools make the financially intelligent decision and drop football in favor of rugby. For the most part, they aren't going to making the tv money that the PAC-12 is.
