This is untrue. While the RSL may have problems, a debt to Sean Whalen is not one of them. The topic of the failed Utah Warriors team has been covered on the Super League section of this website. Unlike a fully established rugby club that is more integral to the local community, the Warriors depended upon temporary financial backing from an unreliable individual.

maybe, just maybe these are our capitalist forces at work. maybe if there was a market and marketing opportunites they would present themselves. maybe just maybe these are the realities of sports in the united states. rugby super leagues has spent 15 million dollars to play good rugby - come we all remember what there were some not very good clubs in the RSL - pac, philly whitemarsh, charlotte, etc....bruce defends the clubs well an article...

"Maybe it is time for USA Rugby to look at the SANZAR systems for top representation? That is, State/Provincial representative teams rather than clubs." Cool. Who's paying for it?

Maybe it is time for USA Rugby to look at the SANZAR systems for top representation? That is, State/Provincial representative teams rather than clubs. Push the Super League clubs back down to the local club level, which would dramatically reduce their operating costs and need to travel. Simultaneously it would raise the required standard of local club competitions. Then have State coaches picking a representative team from a combination of State club and college ranks. That means THE best players from each state. Have USA rugby assist with funding travel and create teams which fans can immediately identify. That is their home state!

"Business model"? Does that even exist in the Super League? Clubs like Utah and Denver have been pushing for new models and new programs within the Super League, yet nothing has changed or happened. The Super League has major issues starting at the top, and now they have additional legal issues. Teams are dropping like flies. They kicked the Utah Warriors out of the league with no explanation and have refused to give the Warriors their $25,000 bond back. When the Super League tells people that teams don't have money etc, yet a team has places $25,000 with the league, you have issues. When the league cant return the money for a team they kicked out, you have even bigger issues.

Perhaps people are negative about the supposed premier competition has failed to make any actual tangible progress at any time during it existence. That its no more 'professional' now than it was in it inaugural season. Among other reasons.

Interesting everyone is always so negative about the super league. You must complete the pathway from youth to elite for development to work. The Super League is the only model at moment in US that is generating this high performance spectrum for players aspiring to make the eagles. High performance rugby is a very expensive and a necessary platform for USA to improve on international level. If we loose this high performance level we will have no where for the record numbers of youth players to progress and aspire to progress to. These clubs should be commended and supported for trying provide a platform like the RSL, not told they are a country club...

"this is a country club league. for wealthy clubs, by weathly clubs, by invitation. blah blah sponsorship... self appointed top competition in uniteds states...good for them. not good for all. not great for usa rugby in general. just another comp. period." To be fair, the same criticism can be levvied on the Varsity Cup. And please learn to improve where you place punctuation in your posts.
