For those whining about Notre Dame. Why do you think rugby suddenly began to be televised nationally on NBC? Do you think the NBC, Notre Dame, Olympics connection is all coincidence? The Irish program has done more to promote the sport in this country than any program outside of Cal or BYU in just a few short years.

It's tough to hear people talk about Cal or BYU as if they will dominate the college game indefinitely. In the case of BYU, of course I'm all for that, but 2013 will be much, much different. No Shaun Davies and Dylan Lubbe means huge question marks at the critical halfback connection. And knowing the team as I do, I really couldn't even venture a guess as to who would be an adequate replacement at these positions. Honestly, I could guess, but I can guarantee that BYU's new halfbacks will be nowhere near the level of the two departed South Africans. Period. BYU always produces solid forwards and backs time and time again, but true halfback chemistry is another story. Bottom line, I believe BYU won't be as solid as in previous years, and so 2013 would have been the perfect year for the D1-A to showcase a highly competitive level of rugby across the board. Sad, sad, sad that we appear to all be following in Cal's footsteps ... ah, what might have been!!!

Lots of insightful comments and observations here in response to this article and others' comments. I count myself as one of the most shocked to learn of BYU's withdrawal from D1-A a few months ago. It felt like a huge slap in the face after years of my own cries for BYU's ascension to and perpetual occupation of the top spot in the nation ... especially after Cal's voluntary demotion therefrom. At any rate, I was initially consoled to learn of the Varsity Cup as it would mean a chance to play Cal in the regular season. Outside of that fact and after reading many of the below comments, however, I'm now wondering if there's any other real benefit to be had. And now, what is left of the D1-A? Does it still remain or does it dissolve back into D1-AA???

you guys make a lot of allegations for people who don't know much about what is going on. your information source is what? 2 or 3 rugbymag articles? talk to the coaches and players of these teams. ask ANY BYU player if they're scared of Arkansas state or Life... i agree the BYU team will have a different dynamic because they lost 3 players. its very difficult to replace su'a. his size and power in the scrum and then the intimidation factor. davies counter attack is almost irreplaceable but other than that byu will be better as they'll need to play more as a team (something they haven't really done well lately) Now as for Lasike, who knows if he'll be coming back because of football. other than that the entire team is coming back. there's nothing to support the claims that byu is scared. the whole thing about cal hiding from the competition.. lets be real they lost more than 1/2 their starters, its not the same for byu. but to me Life=#1

Rugby mag needs to write their own articles and not just copy and paste one from byurugby. Life and Arkansas State will be the best teams in college rugby next year. And Saint Mary's will probably beat Cal again.. BYU is hiding from the competition a year after they blamed Cal for doing the same thing...

What dark times are these for college rugby? In 2013, ego trumps honor, and cash usurps competitive spirit. This Varsity Cup is laughable. How about just schedule a Cal/BYU match and call the winner the national champion? After all, they usually win it, don't they? It just seems silly to make them have to go through the rigamarole of a structured playoff where teams like ASU, SMC, Cal Poly, Life, CWU, Army and SDSU, would really just waste time and provide more excessively entertaining rugby. Anyone who watched the 2012 D-1A playoffs knows what a phenomenal product these teams put on the field. Let the RUGBY WARS BEGIN!

What reason would they have for applying to D1-AA if not to play for a championship? It certainly isn't the regular season competition they would face. I don't think they'll be admitted to D1-AA, it serves no one to allow them in.

Ok, so maybe the non Varsity Cup D1AA teams in these conferences will compete for the D1AA national championship but do you really think Cal/BYU/Utah will? In addition to the Varsity Cup? I doubt it but we'll see...
