The real story here (imo) is the developing trend of colleges/universities placing their rugby programs in a limbo/sweet spot (depending on how you feel) between their varsity sports and club sports departments. PSU, BYU, ArkSt, and many more colleges with the newest being NDC have done this in order to give their rugby programs varsity-esque support (paid coaching, admissions help, access to varsity facilities, athletic trainers, etc) without actually officially granting varsity status. Barring the unlikely collapse of college football or the repeal of Title IX, men's rugby will never be made varsity on a large scale. So this avenue to varsity-esque status is what we should all be pushing for and celebrating.

The definition you use is the one you have adopted. All I'm saying is that it isn't very helpful to readers to proclaim that NDC has varsity programs when, by the definition commonly used by your readers and everyone else in the country for that matter, they are obviously a club program. How about this. Ask NDC whether they consider their rugby teams to be club or varsity and we will go by that.

WOW,I hope nobody from the NDC administration reads this as a bunch of you are being ... be happy that this is happening and that it is a positive for the sport. Small schools like this will help the sport and make it grow, when larger schools start to see howthere are benifits we can only hope that they will follow.

I didn't write the definition, so it's not mine. Just because your interpretation of the term varsity isn't in line with the actual defintion doesn't mean the definition is wrong.

Being designated as varsity and not club would be one Pat. By your definition a school like penn state has a varsity program. By your dictionary definition nearly every college in America has a varsity program. I just think the distinction should be made. Cal's rugby team is a varsity sport and is under their athletic dept. these new programs are not. However the the news and trend is encouraging

Merriam Webster definition of varsity: "the principal squad representing a university, college, school, or club especially in a sport" The VP said the women's team might go under the NCAA, not might go varsity. What makes a team varsity in your mind? This team has paid coaching, facilities, an operating budget and scholarships. Does that not make it varsity?
