[quote name="doubter"]I hope some young american kid that has been playing rugby for a numbers of years didnt get overlooked for this fella. quote] Few things: A) the Carlin IS an American...yes black folks can be born here too.. lol B)we don't have the rugby culture in the US yet to support the learning of the game at the consistency of other nations yet. So we aren't going to consistently "out-rugby" England, NZ's and SA's for a while. We need to leverage some athletes to help get the sport more notoriety among top athletes, so they start ealier. C) A lot of promising talent is not retained by USA rugby, part of the reason is the lack of consistent support to develop athletes on a fast track. The kid has been playing rugby maybe 6 months and has 6 international tries..more than many have in a career in any nation really.

I watched Carlin play football for Jackson High School. He once fought his way out of a crowd of the other 21 players, ran behind and all the way around them and dashed about 60 yds for the TD...no one came close to catching him. What a blast! Jackson is part of the Federal League that brought you Hall of Famer Dan Dierdorf, and NFL players Todd Blackledge, Derick and Dustin Fox, Brian and Mike Hartline, Josh McDaniels, Mike Doss, Kenny Peterson, Kirk Barton. The Pro Football HOF is just down the road about 7 miles. We grow them tough here...we just don't have rugby here (yet). You wait and enjoy the show if Carlin can pull this off!

Obviously there are a lot of questions to answer but there have been quite a few guys his size or smaller who have been very successful internationally . Cecil Afrika being the most obvious current player.

Speed sounds great and the idea that he wants to try his hand at rugby. My concern is at 160 pounds, how well he can tolerate getting hit without pads and tackling the elite players on the international scene. Hope he doesn't get injured. Plus as everyone else mentioned, having the rugby skills; passing, quick decision making that you don't obtain as a track star. This is going to be interesting to follow.

However, I think you never met, played with or against or ever talked to Dan Lyle. Point being, 1 - I think this article is [censored, don't use this word]. 2 - Despite myself, any exposure of anyone rugby is always great for the game and all of us 3 - While the whole "Rugby Pedigree" idea feeds our hubris, try to remember that some of the greatest players of this game were not born with a rugby ball in their hands. The best crossover rugby players could be Basketballers, Wrestlers, Speed cup shufflers or Shot putters. Who cares? You will never find me complaining that someone walked onto a rugby pitch.

I cannot believe the crying I hear. Shut up. I thought Rugby was all welcoming. As somebody said when it comes to Rugby in the US almost all of us are cross over’s. When you run 10.2sec. 100 meters you are going to catch the eye of people faster then if you run 11sec. flat. (Wish I could have run 10.2)The kid played both ways on a DII football ran hit and got hit, Can’t wait to hear the crying when the DI football players that don’t get draft decide to give rugby a try.

American Gridiron coaches have a theory that a coach can only "win" two or three games at most by tactics, team psych-up, etc. For the most part, it is a case of my 7/11/15 are better than your 7/11/15. The point is that having a winger who can run a 10-sec. 100 meters gives a team a better chance of winning than a team with a 15-sec. 100-meter man.

Unless rugby was the first sport you played, you're a cross-over athlete too. Everyone in America is, which is both the greatest weakness and greatest strength of our sporting culture. Lots of choice and opportunity, but much less specialization.

Focus on guys who cn play rugby , hopefully he will lern the game , however realise at the end of the day , stats only matter so much....every team in the world has stats ...the facts are , can you recognie a two on one ...can you tackle...can you make the pass that counts...etc etc ...I am tired of seeing guys who have speed have no other true skill....I am sure the kid may be great , but dont discount all the other athletes who are comitted to rugby and working hard....
