Derek - a yellow for Suniula and a warning to Clever that the next would be a red was sort of accomplished when the red was handed out straight off. Emerick is a great player known for getting carded. This would not be the first Eagles match that his focus got side tracked and cost the team dearly. The difference now is that he is a bit older (should be wiser too) and there are some other great players itching to take his place. let's hope he can continue to play tough and smart and help advance the Eagles otherwise...

When it comes to the red cards, they were foolish, on our part. Our centers need more discipline than that especially when you that many caps under your belt. We were in the game competing and 'unwarranted' play in our midfield cost us. Congratulations to the gentleman on the pitch for playing within the rules and giving Italy one hell of a match.

I agree with you, Alex. We've seen a very interesting U.S. team these past few weeks. Is it possible that the new coach could have put his stamp on the Eagles in just his first month at the helm? Beats me. All I know is that anyone who played for Iron Mike or watched him coach at New York City's Xavier High School these past 25 years is not at all surprised that his Eagles are tough, hardnosed and relentless, no matter the conditions, no matter the score. One difference: Mike's Xavier teams were also supremely disciplined. I love watching the tough and talented Mr. Emerick and Mr. Suniula play, but a word of warning for those two tempestuous centers: you had a back in camp this June, a kid from Cal, who played for Mike for four years at 16th Street. He's a center, too-- and pretty tough and talented himself-- but he was never red-carded when he played for Mike. Or yellow-carded. Ever. Capiche?

I wholeheartedly think that the red cards should've been handled differently. I think the best course of action would've been a yellow for Suniula, then pull over Clever and tell him that if it happens again it's red. Then obviously Emerick would get the red. I don't think either hit was malicious enough to deserve an immediate red. It changed the game when Suniula went off. It the put the US at such a disadvantage that they couldn't overcome in spite of their awesome effort. I echo Pat, the last 2 games against Georgia & Italy have been awesome. Well done guys and well done Coach Tolkin. I'm impressed.

According to 5Lock4ward..""Unwarranted red cards"? We have to take the 'fan' out of our analysis. Both players hit an opponent well after the ball had left their hands and neither tackler wrapped with their arms." Neither of which of that is true..and neither was a red card... Before commenting again perhaps try Rookie Rugby next time...

"unwarranted red cards" Alex, please give the ref bashing a rest. You sound like a 12 year old kid going on about the called third strike that wasn't just in his mind. Grow up!

"Unwarranted red cards"? We have to take the 'fan' out of our analysis. Both players hit an opponent well after the ball had left their hands and neither tackler wrapped with their arms. Both tackles were illegal and dangerous. I love the Eagles but let's keep it real, those hits were dirty. I am proud as hell of the efforts made by those who remained on the pitch while playing down 2 men. Now please explain to me what the Pacific Rim 2013 involves and what teams are participating. Is it a one off event or a new tournament for the 2nd tier teams to get regular test matches?
