Lots of chaos in college rugby right now with schools going in so many different directions. Regions, then CPD, now conferences. CPL, CPD, DI-A, DI-AA. Schools jumping from one to the other. Cant imagine this is beneficial to collegiate rugby. I cant keep track. Central governing body has completely lost control with each team going in their own direction. Or could it be the power teams ie Cal, BYU, etc are only looking out for their own best interests fueling the fire. In the end it might not make a difference because 7s is most likely to be the only aspect of rugby that takes roots in the US.

Delusional: It is good if the teams in those conferences that join D1-A are prepared to put in the work and the school is making the facilities available. Absolutely! That's a case of teams stepping up to higher levels of play and that's great! I'm against pulling top teams down into D1-AA because that is a backward step. I would really like to see some kind of process for teams to qualify to compete in D1-A to ensure the competitive quality of that division. I'm not a fan of teams being able to select the level of competition they play in arbitrarily. There needs to be some form of discipline involved so that there is honor and integrity at both the D1-A and D1-AA level.

Yes, I am right. USAR is currently trying to get as many D1-AA conferences as possible to move up en masse to D1-A. But that's a good thing, right? More teams playing D1-A/varsity rugby?

The conference system isn't about pairing up the teams that are good right now. It's about convincing the colleges to give more to their rugby teams. College rugby is working against a reputation as a non-serious club sport, and varsity level rugby is still very much in it's infancy. It's easier at the larger schools to convince those in charge that rugby is the next big college sport if they play in leagues more similar to the leagues their other sports play in, rather than non-descript regional leagues.

I would say that there are maybe 7-10 "elite" college teams. Cal, St. Mary's, BYU, Utah, Arkansas State, Life, Davenport, and maybe Air Force, Army, and Lindenwood. That's a small, far-flung league. It's just not economically feasible. To make it economically feasible, they've had to lower their standards, or apparently forget about the concept of standards. And then on top of that, this league will still only have maybe 3/4 of the elite teams. The Division 1-A concept is broken. Maybe it can be revived as a Heineken Cup-like competition to go along with a unified Division 1.

Oh, I've got it! Let's have every college team start a new, elite, competition. Imagine how great America will be when we have 427 National Champions and 427 separate all american squads!!! We'll be hell on wheels then!

You know what Battle's vision for D1-A is? To merge all of D1 back into one competition. I know that for a fact from working with him over the last two years on college rugby related issues. And I think he has good ideas in that regard. So explain to me how that vision comports with your "D1-A or the highway" approach?

Rich Cortez only recently took over as one of the directors of college rugby and Kevin Battle just stepped in to oversee Division 1-A. They haven't made any announcements yet. The Division 1-A meeting was this past weekend. You should give them a chance to tell you what they think before you dismiss them.
