I played in the CPD/D1-A for two years now & its crazy where the leauge is now compared to where it started. Many teams have dropped out and by the looks of it the leauge dosent look like it will remain in the near future.I feel that I speak for many involved out there when I say that the two biggest problems are FUNDING,& monitoring ELIGIBILITY.Many teams in all divisions have the struggle of finding funds and paying semester dues before they can even get on the pitch. The same way many teams feel that age limit and eligibility monitoring should be taken more seriously. The most simple way to fix that would be bringing rugby to the NCAA and making it an official varsity sport Its time for America to bring rugby to the future the popularity is booming and with more and more people learning the game. Making it an varsity sport will boost its popularity in america even more.

You've hit the nail on the head! This is why more teams should be joining Division 1-A and working to improve rather than folding their tent and retreating into the masses in D1AA (or D2 as I call it). Quoting Bdub: Cal and BYU programs- great at rugby obviously. But they don't have the marketing of Ohio State, NAVY, Penn State, Notre Dame, Florida, Texas, etc. Those schools, while they are not as good, offer college rugby a lifeline into mainstream collegiate sports. Just 1 or 2 dominant teams, does not. LOL

Where do any teams expect to go by demoting themselves? I don't get it. BYU of all teams petitioned and fought for years just to be given the opportunity to compete for the National Title, and now after winning just a second time, we're immediately turning around and spitting on it??? Man oh man, and I've been on here dishing it out to Cal for their decision ... rightly so on the one hand, I think, since they pretty well march to the beat of their own drummer ... but now BYU is essentially following their lead?? What??? Why??? Ok, insert foot in mouth ... I just feel ridiculous right now, since I have no clue what our coaches are doing and the few players I've talked to don't seem to have any ideas either. When will teams sit still and actually try to grow instead of constantly uprooting themselves?!?! Wind the College Rugby clock back another 5 years ... the water's going to be muddy for a while!!!

I wish I knew the reasons for BYU dropping out, but unfortunately I haven't heard anything through the grapevine. I was really hoping that BYU coaches would take Cal's drop-out as an opportunity to step up and make a statement, not just by winning a National Championship as basically expected but by embracing the DI-A as an opportunity to take the lead as the new standard bearer of collegiate rugby. Let other teams drift about and forgo National Titles. Take time to build up the level of the DI-A, so it gets more and more marketable while you just so happen to remain the #1 team. Focus on developing opportunities for advertising, sponsorships, PR, and etc. These were my thoughts and hopes ... obviously not in the same vein as the BYU coaching staff. What now???

Division 1-A, despite the problems in the first 2 seasons, has caused college rugby to improve. Cal and BYU have been elite for a long time. St. Mary's, Arkansas State, and Life all played excellent rugby in 2012. Many other D1A teams also improved over their 2011 performance. There's just no arguing the fact that having an elite competition is good for college rugby and can lift the standard of play significantly if given the time. We (USA Rugby, the universities, and all of us Rugby Mag readers) need to give it more time. Let the leadership make some adjustments and promote Division 1-A further. Not all colleges will want to be a part of the varsity model and that's okay. Let's not hold back the universities that do want to take rugby ahead for the sake of those who want to keep it where it has been.

Sounds like they're leaving due to the new restrictions on eligibility. What are the chances of a new independent league with the varsity/pseudo-varsity teams that the new rules affect? BYU, Arkansas State, Life, Davenport, Lindenwood, maybe see if Palmer College would be interested in rejoining the college game? That would be a hell of a league.

BYU, Jack Clark and all the rest think there is a pot of gold at the end of their rugby rainbow, but there is not. No sponsors, no broadcast partners, no Athletic Directors, no mainstream media outlets....Nada. They ware all in the desert and USA Rugby is not the camel they hoped. Expect more pipe dreams and blunder from the collegiate rugby coaches. They're all up their own A$$'s
