CPDUD Why you hate DU so much? ASU, LIFE won't drop out. Cal might be back in D1-A as the PAC 12 said they want to play in D1-A + new California Conference that’s not in Pac 12. Army didn't drop out as it's just Navy that did and they will steam roll all teams in the ACRL league.... Play your league and get better, maybe in 20 years your UNI might become as good as DU, Lindenwood, Life, BYU, Cal and ASU...Its guys like you that gives rugby a bad name. Go play soccer if you are afraid of playing good teams regardless of age. USA Rugby made the rules. If I am right NCAA doesn’t have rules for football about age? Don’t see anyone complain about that……

@Rugbyfan Any truth to the rumor that the Davenport administration and coaches are looking at moving up to D1-A? Heard they like their chances now that Army, Navy, Cal and BYU are now in D1-AA. If they can get St Mary's, Life and Ark State to drop out of D1-A, get those 7th year exceptions for a few players and another 250K in funds from the university they have a great shot!

I dont think the issue is age, most every team has that dude that is a little older and has a big role in the squad. I have never played against DU but got a chance to watch them play against KST in last years Sweet 16's and would have loved to play against a varisty squad. That's the issue, a small school has the time and most of the time the money to put aside to make rugby a priority and a varsity sport. I think its good for the future of rugby, but is a long shot for most big schools that can't even use their rugby pitch to practice most of the time because of other sports like LAX and soccer (TXST is an example). So complain about a team having the tremendous opportunities that come with the support of a school while most others have to fight with their athletic departments every week, thats what I do..

@realist, Look at the ages of the players, 95% of the guys started with Davenport when they were 18 and 19 (As the program is going on it's 4th year, so there will be alot of seniors that 22 and 23 next season like most college sports)so your point of the team is stacked with older players is invalid. They have one foreign kid in Eloff, that played outside center and moved to flyhalf after the starting 10 got hurt.....DU average age is younger then OSU, BGSU,IU and Miami. You just sour that they put 60 on you as it sounds you are from BGSU

@Rugbyfans What's your point? That they are stacked with older players? That was obviously the plan. Older players and foreign ones in key skilled positions. It was a tactic to build the program.

@Realist Your point that they won it because of 2 players is invalid. Tactical decision to recruit these players? The coach that started the program is coaching at Clemson. So you tell me Davenport would have lost in the finals if they didn't have Demecus Beach or Lance Cavanaugh? I played them and 4 of my high school teammates ware on the national squad that’s Freshman, believe me they would have done just fine without Beach and Cavanaugh. Look at their Roster they only have 2 players above 23 “Beach and Cavanaugh”. Their Front Row was nr 1(21), nr 2( 19 )and Nr.3(19), Nr 4(21), Nr 5(25), Nr 6 (19) Nr 7(22), Nr 8 (21), Nr 9(23), Back up (9) 20 and 18, Nr 10 (21) , Nr 11 (19) Nr 12 (20) Nr 13 (21), Nr 14,(24), Nr 15 (20). They are losing 3 starters from this last team according to Rugbymag in Beach and Cavanaugh and their nr.9. All the guys that didn’t make the 22 were freshman that traveled with them….All players according to my friend coming in is high school grads.

@RUGBYFANS You ignore the obvious. Davenport made the tactical decision to recruit 20 and 21 year old individuals playing club rugby to insure success when playing college teams. It got them 2 national championships. The other option was to start by recruiting HS grads and build their program. It was cynical and calculated. Proof that a team with 21 to 25 year old players trumps a team with 18 to 22.

Tim Vincent – story around is that they are moving up to Div 1A. Big 10 is forming and probably the MAC as well. If they don’t move up they won’t have a league to play in. All these rugby programs making “Football” Conferences are afraid to play Davenport, Lindenwood, Life, BYU and ASU. Sad but it’s true. I have never heard Dartmouth, Harvard, and all the Ivey League schools complain to play Big 10, ACRL, Pac, MAC school because these schools academic standards are way lower then the Ivey League schools.....People can only dream about big name schools becoming Varsity....

Realist - What's the problem with recruiting guys who still have eligibility left? Rugby is about 2nd chances and that’s what Demecus and Lance got. Both these players will have degrees thanks to the DU Rugby program. If they stayed in Toledo no one would have ever noticed Demecus. Now he is on the USA radar and if he put his mind to it he can be in the Eagle team for the 2015 RWC. About the age thing, any competitive athlete doesn’t complain about age. You want to test yourself against the best no matter age. You want to be in high school stop playing rugby then
