According to the Facebook page, the nine teams are Illinois, Minnesota, Nebraska, Wisconsin, Indiana, Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State, and Purdue. The holdouts are Iowa (probably travel reasons), Northwestern (probably travel and competitive reasons), and Penn State (competitive reasons). The OSU rugby website also says the league will be for the fall. I suppose they could change that to spring too if D1-A ceases to exist, but I wouldn't count on it.

Jaret - Ohio State's shortest trip in Rugby East for D1A is the same in regards to what PSU would have to do in the Big10. They had to go to Army, to Delaware, to Navy, to Kutztown, to Rutgers, and in 2011 they went to Dartmouth... So again PSU can then suck it up. Look at the travel in the SEC or ACC or Pac12... Those teams will be crossing state lines quite a bit. In regards to scores and competitiveness , I get it. PSU took it to OSU this year no doubt, but in the spring 2011 D1A season PSU only beat OSU 17-7... And OSU hung close with most the teams in Rugby East this year. Not saying PSU wouldnt be the best of the Big10, but easy on they'd beat everyone in the conference by 50 points. And please remember that NOT 1 team from Rugby East has won a playoff game in 2 years... so what's it matter. And anyway Cal will beat every team in their PAC12 conference by 50 plus points, so what, you dont think they should form the PAC12 now?

"And before you respond with something like Michigan isnt high level... I get it, but there are a lot of good to very good teams in the Big Ten. PSU, OSU, Wisc, Minn, Purdue, Indiana, MSU, and Nebraska all have solid sides." I think we can all agree that PSU and OSU are the two best rugby programs in the Big 10, and PSU beat OSU this fall 60-17. What would a PSU/MSU or PSU/Neb scoreline look like? Level of competition has to be taken into account when forming a new conference, and this conference would not be very competitive. Also travel would be an issue. Look at the proposed eastern division. PSU, OSU, Pur, Ind, Mich, and MSU. PSU's shortest trip would be to OSU about 6 hours away. The trip to Mich is 6 1/2 hour, and for what a game that will end up in a massive blow out. I like the idea of the conferences but the schools and administrations would have to get on board financially and that just wont happen.

Most of these teams pretty much play a Big Ten fall schedule anyway. In the Fall 2011 season, Ohio State played Indiana, Penn State, Purdue, and MSU. The only team that would be in the Eastern Devision who they didnt play was Michigan. So this wouldn't change anything except make it an official conference and get rid of the teams like Miami, Davenport and BGSU. And then if you add 1 cross conference game and a championship game played in Chicago (example)... thats not that bad. So if teams want to play in higher level rugby competition then these travel requirements are a must and not that big of an obstacle. And before you respond with something like Michigan isnt high level... I get it, but there are a lot of good to very good teams in the Big Ten. PSU, OSU, Wisc, Minn, Purdue, Indiana, MSU, and Nebraska all have solid sides. PSU would dominate this league. It would be good for branding the program, but bad for their competativeness .

Others need to improve no doubt, and hopefully with this new conference it will give them the support for their university and alumni to do just that

If you can get all 12, then seems like a no brainer, and the travel/costs seem manageable. You play 5 teams in your 6-team division, then play 1 cross-sub-conf game to get your 6-game min. The cross-conf could be like the NFL does it where the top 2 teams from the yr before play the following yr, the #2's, the #3's, etc. It could be based on geography. It could be a 1 v 6, 2 v 5, 3 v 4 setup based on prior yr. Or random draw. Lots of options. As budgets and support increase, you could add more cross-sub conf games to the schedule.

Unless the school administrators get behind this idea it will remain an idea. The CPD is being done in my travel costs and unbalanced schedules. Travel costs for this conference will be ridiculous and Penn State will steamroll every other team in the Big 10. I like the idea, but it cannot succeed without the schools financing the idea.

This is a perfect set-up for a Two Tier system with six teams in a bracket and promotion and relegation. This set-up will make for competitive rugby. Sixty point blow outs are not good for either side. Also, Notre Dame might throw their hat into the mix....
