Maybe many of you don't realize PAC12 network is going to be a big deal. It hasn't even started broadcasting and its already a big deal. They will be looking for exciting content. With Olympic 7's coming in 2016 this is an opportunity that may be huge for the sport. I can only hope that PAC12 will consider Cal Poly for Rugby as an affiliate as we currently are for Wrestling.

If this occurs, the dissolution of the CPD is guaranteed since all the big money schools in the West conference will be gone. It's a shame really, but as long as the playoff structure remains close to what it currently is, then a true national championship will exist. I would love to see the playoffs become more of a March Madness approach where many different conferences of differing levels compete against each other. In a match between Davenport and Utah, I'd put my money on Davenport. It would be a great way to grow the game and interest level much faster. Plus with that style of playoffs networks would be way more interested in televising the games.

Once again, a sport is ruled over not by play on the field, but by irrelevant "cultural" associations. Why should the institutional research/educational goals of Cal, UCLA, Az, etc. affect play on the pitch? It's a bigoted non-sequitur to say "We share a culture off the field, so we're going to create our own *exclusive* league." No matter how well the other teams play, they are not welcome. SMC may be tiny compared to Cal. BYU may have a completely different mission than Utah. But in rugby, the teams excluded from this league beat the teams that - for non-rugby reasons - are welcomed at Jack's table.

If there is one thing that we in USA Rugby should have learned by now is that no change is perfect. Also, I have not seen any evidence that any change has bolstered development. However, changing back towards regional conferences will help foster development because many student-athletes, particularly those at the club level, cannot do not have the time or money to be consistently traveling via airplane in order to compete throughout the season. The Pac-12 conference will be great for most Pac-12 teams. Not only is a move back towards a regional conference, but the traditions of the Pac-12 run far deeper than rugby and Pac-12 players want to play other Pac-12 teams. A line has to be drawn somewhere and there will always be winners (Cal, Utah, UCLA in this case) and losers (SMC, Davis, CWU, OSU) on both sides of the line. However, I see no reason why the great non-Pac-12 programs in the Pac-West region can’t form another competitive conference.

Considering that SMC was the best team on the west coast and CWU is a constant threat how would this be good for rugby? You know what, BYU, SMC, CWU, Poly, SDSU, Davis should form a league and consistently kick the crap out of those PAC-12 teams. Thanks Jack on trying to advance your agenda and not advancing agenda that would be for the good of the game. People want a good PRODUCT and watching Cal beat OSU by 100 will not be in the interest of the sport.

I'm amused every time someone brings up "affiliate" members. It's not going to happen. Yes, they do it in wrestling where the Pac-12 only has three programs and needs Boise State and a few other schools to have enough teams to qualify for automatic bids to the NCAA tournament. That doesn't apply here. Every single Pac-12 program is Division 1, there is no reason to add outside of that.

Cal left a very similar league siting all manner of excuses. Obviously Jack Clark didn't like the financial outlook of it and bolted. #truth I say keep regional leagues for ease of travel and bring in a Heineken Cup style PAC-12? Teams play in pools and move on to a knockout PAC-12 Championship. On the other hand, schools like Boise State and Cal Poly compete in the PAC-12 for wrestling. You could always include a school like CWU, however I like the idea of a PAC-12 Cup better.

Yeah there's some great positives in aligning with NCAA conferences but also some big headaches for smaller schools that have a good rugby program like CWU. And where do BYU go? Sorry, I'm not from the US so I don't know if they belong to a traditional conference or are an independent.
