I agree completely with EndTheMadness. Given that the teams invited were selected months in advance on reputation alone, it is unfair to those that proved their worth on the field to see others compete for a "national championship." I asked several at USARFU to adjust the nomenclature but received not even a reply.

There is no need to have a tounament of this sort. HS kids play for state championships. But if USARFU won't listen to reason, we DEMAND that it at least quit using the word "championship" in any context. Call it a showcase, a post-season fandango, or even a rugby cotillion for the elites. But it ain't no championship.

I'm not sure that Motherlode's coach would have wanted to have gone to this tournament. If his team had been the one to have spent time and money traveling, it would have been a lot harder to have held the other team hostage by insisting (after the players were on the field) that his team walks if the rules aren't changed to accommodate his preferences. The idea of unrestricted substitution in a state championship rugby match is kind of mind-boggling, isn't it?

St.Gregs school of 60 boys who won PA in single highschool also tied Gonzaga and lost to West Shore by 3 in tournments early this spring otherwise went undefeated is closing. This was their last chance to make it and its not the teams fault they didn't. I mean they didn't even get to play at MARFU for a chance to go. It would have been just let them go up against Gonzaga one more time for a chance to get to nationals.

I agree that if this tournament retains its current format, the event should be retitled the USA Rugby National Invitational Tournament. I also agree that teams should be invited 2 weeks before, not 3 months. Require teams to apply in January/February and to post a meaningful deposit at that time ($2,500)? If you're invited to the NIT and don't go, you forfeit your deposit. And please, enough about how Greenwich was wronged this year. Ignorance of the new NIT format and application process is no excuse. Rugbymag, USARugby.org, the LAUs and GUs were all discussing and writing about this for many weeks before the application deadline this winter. The Met New York Union's high school league-- in which Greenwich played for the best part of 2 decades was scrapped, as was the Northeast U.S. playoffs in which Greenwich had competed for the past 9 years. How could Greenwich put together its season schedule without learning of these radical changes?

To those who questioned Indiana's presence at this year's Nationals while singing the praises of Utah rugby, let the record show that both the high school and high school club finals featured an Indiana team. Only one Utah team made it. Final score of the high school club title game: Cathedral (Indiana) 51, United (Utah)0. Oops. (Apology accepted.)

please take care in recognizing the teams that were not invited and maybe should have been when the national rankings are published. The graduating seniors can at least take pride in a meaningful ranking. Greenwich, Herriman for single school boys and Mother Lode for the girls.

That would be cool. Add Trybe, United, Herriman, and Snow Canyon to that mix and that would be the the best tournament ever. Someone should make this happen - the NorCal-Utah challenge!

Not sure the heartburn over the use of 19 year olds by the Utah club teams in the past. If you are competing in the U-19 division, why would you not use players who fit the age requirements? NorCal rugby is awesome, but in the club division most every time that they played a Utah team to qualify for nationals, they got beat. If all teams were allowed to play 19 year olds and they chose not to, that is their choice and should not reflect negatively on the competition. Now, if you want to talk about the use of foreign imports, you would have more of a point...
