Let's be realistic here. Not one person in this debate has watched every player on every team. With that said, if I had to put my money on it I would say that Goff and his colleagues have watched 5 times as much film as all of you, possibly even combined! So none of you have the right to criticize this article as it is not the "real" All American list. Of course they are going to miss a few players who deserve to be on here, as it is nearly impossible to name 45 players who perfectly fit the bill. Honestly, in my mind, there are quite a few players on here who were missed or placed in the wrong team behind someone of lesser skill. So until all of you stop talking about politics and actually do something to increase the level of awareness of rugby in the states, you're going to have to suck it up and accept Goff's opinion. At the end of the day, no one likes a hypocrite. One good game against the likes of an Oklahoma or a Wyoming doesnt mean that you deserve to be on this list.

This is just a mans opinion of course its gonna clash with others opinions so dont get all hurt about it. I think the front row they picked is fine. The other prop for BYU may be mobile but mobility isnt the halmark of a great prop.Crawford and Sua are anchors that can pack a good scrum and I dont think that the other BYU prop is as good a scrummager - thats what a props job is. Dont agree with Pati in the 13 jersey - again a mans opinion. I too would have had that Sumsion kid in at least one of the teams but I think TJ deserves his place. He is a quiet achiever IMO.

I have to disagree with the BYU lock comment. Both Kyle Sumsion and TJ Allred are good locks. Allred plays great defense and makes his tackles and has brought a lot to the lineout this year compared to last. He is fit to get around the field to hit rucks and support. Sumsion is definately a great line-breaker and has the upper hand in that skill when it comes to Allred but I wouldn't say that makes him the best BYU lock. Ray Forrester needs to be on the first team. Period. Thats a mistake. Bristol at lock is a good choice but I have never heard of the Kutztown fella.

Responding to this statement, "These are players who we consider are the best at their position in the league." No disrespect to Don Pati because he is a great player but players should be placed in positions they played during the season, not for a position they may have played once or twice. Being a great player and all he is a 9 not a 13. Just because he is definitely not the best 9 in D1A should not mean he should be placed in another postion just to make sure you put his name on the list. The goal of this was to notify people of the best players at their position in their performances THIS season. Not placing players in postions they may have played once or twice throughout the season and saying they were the BEST player at that position this season. Players that played the postion all year long deserve to be placed in their positions.

I'd like to see this done with Rugby Mag staff and all Division 1-A head coaches polled to select their top three candidates at each position. The coaches should be restricted from voting on their own players. It would be awesome to have a Division 1-A allstar game, east vs west, so the top players can go head to head with their best competitors. That would take some of the guess work out of the process. It's good to see Rugby Mag recognize the top players in the top division!

UD4 - same old question ... you got a name? Who would you drop to install the player(s) you think should be there. In my experience, people can get very excited about a specific player they know to be good - and there are certainly good players who were left off this list - but they have blinders as to the attributes of others around the country. I will tell you we had a lot of debate and discussion on this list. It wasn't made lightly. Thanks for reading - AG

On the BYU side of things (since I am familiar with the team), I'd have to disagree a bit. First off, Kyle Sumsion is BYU's best lock by far. No offense to TJ, but Sumsion is fearless in the tackle and is one of the strongest runners I have ever seen, Roundy included.... Second, Mikey is a stud, but if I had to pick between props, Ray's my man. His speed can match most backs, has excellent ball skills, and is always making big plays. Also, I agree with a lot of the above comments about the great players overshadowed by poor records. Sometimes I would love to get some of those caliber players on teams like BYU, Life, etc, where they don't have to carry their whole team, and can instead really sharpen their skills at a specific position, supported by 14 strong teammates.

The Arizona State center over ANY of the UofA centers is irrational. Cody Babers scored twice in two matches and Jack Arnold scored 4 times... He scored none.

Personally, I would slightly change up the team selection of some of the BYU players listed as well as others but I haven't seen enough of these guys play to truly say 'yay or nay'. Glad to see UCLA's Chaput in the mix. That guy was lights out against BYU. Same with AF's #5 Bristol. Shaun Davies is definitely the best scrumhalf in the land ... he's got all the skills and the consistency to back it up. Ray Forrester deserves a higher spot as being one of the most mobile props in college rugby. Obviously, I am acutely familiar with BYU, but I wish I had more exposure to other DI-A programs, like Kutztown, Ark. State, Army, Navy, Texas A&M, and etc. Lots of these guys don't quite get noticed just because their team doesn't go all the way ... hopefully in the future, more extensive means of stats taking will provide more exposure for the most solid players.
