Texas A&M has stated to the SWC that they do not wish to be considered for admission. Immediately following the announcement from CLub officials that Johnny Smith would be taking over for Frank Rizzo as the Coach for Sam Houston State, SHSU immediately resigned from the SWC on May 11th. SHSU’s departure after one year, is contrary to their 3-year commitment to the SWC, as evidenced in the SWC by-laws ratified by SHSU as a Charter Member and approved by USA Rugby. Both A&M & SHSU have stated they intend to form the Alliance Rugby Conference (ARC) that is to be run by the for-profit company T5 1/2 Rugby Development Group, LLC, owned and operated by Craig Coates (TAMU Director of Rugby) & Johnny Smith (former Coach of TAMU). Texas Tech has never contacted SWC seeking admission.

Army C's went undefeated in 2009 until they lost the Met Championship game 25-23 to Fordham, who went to the NRU Final Four that season. It will be exciting to have Army back as a competitor in DIAA. It makes Empire an even stronger conference, and if DIA further erodes, it gives Army A the ability to slot right in if they so desire.

Sad, sad, sad ... Premier College Rugby was created to bolster and market the sport on the whole, and now you've got teams dropping like flies. If D1-A disappears, then it's another 5- to 10-year setback for Rugby in the US. Seriously, you can't advance by having your best teams step down ... you've got to have them bring everyone else up. Money isn't the issue here ... it's the failure of team organizations and stakeholders to exercise their faith and efforts to do something different, to build enthusiasm around their team and the sport as well as find new ways to capitalize on them. Example: BYU vs. Arizona State in Phoenix. BYU recommends that ASU charge admission to the match. ASU declines to do so, citing very low spectator turnout in the past. Result: ASU has about a 100 people attend, while BYU fans surpass 1,000 ... $0 in revenues. Like I said ... Sad.

The interesting thing is that according to the college operating doc on the USA website, if Army B/C-side wins the Empire Conference, they aren't eligible for Nationals in Div I-AA. And that would mean their conference would not receive an AQ to Nationals at all. Seems like a stupid decision by the Empire Conference.

Is the rumor that Army's A side has been accepted to the Empire Conference or Army's C side? The Army C's used to play in (and often win, going undefeated in 2009) MetNY's Collegiate D1 competition, while Army's A side played in New England's more challenging D1.
